Power Shortages Crippling Pakistan's Economy

Energy shortages across Pakistan are crippling the country's economy and costing businesses millions in lost productivity.
Electricity is cut off for hours at a time, fuel is rationed at filling stations and people are forced to run expensive generators to keep their homes lit.
Pakistan is not producing enough power to meet the growing demand and economists estimate the shortages are shaving 2% off its gross domestic product.
At one time most of the world's hand-stitched leather footballs were made in the town of Sialkot in the Punjab.
It is still a profitable business, but only just.
The power cuts keep production lines idle for hours at a time, orders take longer to make, some have to be flown abroad at great expense to make their deadlines rather than shipped.
"The energy crisis has been here for the last five or six years but it has become very severe over the past couple of years, very very severe," manager Ali Sheikh told Sky News.
"At times it is as if the government is trying to shut industry down altogether. It seems deliberate at times."
Add to that rising unemployment, a negligible tax collection rate, rampant corruption and a security situation that puts buyers off from travelling to Pakistan.
Businessman Asad Bajwa believes many foreigners are now reluctant to visit his factory in Sialkot and orders are down 40%.
But do not write Pakistan off just yet, one leading economist says.
Dr Rashid Amjad , the Vice Chancellor of the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics in Islamabad, said: "The bottom line is we need to revive growth as soon as we can.
"The government has to give it the highest priority and go in for serious economic thinking to ensure macro-economic stability.
"But I still come back to the basic fact that there is a resilience in its people and a resilience in its economy.
"Everybody thinks Pakistan is going to collapse - it never has."
what do you think?

And we care how??? This is the same nation with the nuclear bomb! Suppose we will be sending them a new power station free of charge!!!

The problem with Pakistan is that the Billions in aid that are poured into this country are not used for the purpose intended. Instead it disappears into the coffers of corrupt politicians and the military. Why we and other countries are still giving money to a country that is a nuclear power and has an aid programme of its own is beyond me.

Orange what is wrong with the word f u n d i n g ?

I see the usual suspects are out in force. BTW, " This country is DEAD" (still hiding behind a pseudonym then!) have you ever considered seeking professional help? Not so much for the rampant Xenophobia, but for the dreadful syntax and excessive use of capital letters. I'm sure there is some psychiatrist out there with a sideline in Grammar! LOL.

I donīt know about Xenophobia but as a member of the indigenous population of this Country, I was never asked if I wished to live in a multi cultural society. Through the centuries we have always had immigration in some shape or form and the people of our country have been very kind and tolerant but NOW we are being swamped which is an entirely different thing. Think Red Squirrels and Grey Squirrels Oh Dear !!!

On radio today it was said that India said that they did not want our aid as it was chicken feed, but apparently we inisisted, probably on the basis of thinking that we would get the lovely fighter order. Oh what a surprise, pocketed the money (reluctantly) and gave the order to the French. Foreign is just another word for Bribe. Spend the money on us please, we the elderly, the sick, the young, the unemployed, the businesses need it.

nice to see people responding to whats actualy goin on in the world shame the politicians dont take notice all this money that is wasted in foreign countries look at india in the news today they say they dont want or financial aid yippeee its about time the government spent the money on its own people there are plenty of people out of work this money could help get them into work instead of sending it to countries that use it for not what it was intended plenty of people living in the streets and having a rough time after losing homes/jobs due to greedy bankers let them have some of this aid money

............ Also with regard to Xenophobia, it is true that for centuries immigrants have been coming to our country which has molded us to what we are today and they have been received kindly and with tolerance BUT nobody asked the people of this country whether they wanted to live in a multi cultural society and we are now being swamped with greater numbers than ever before in our history. Think Grey Squirrel and Red Squirrel

Bet its not stopping their support for the Taliban

stevie may
Thats because all the aid given to Pakistan has not been spent on the poor, but pocketed by the rich or given to the Taliban by corrupt Pakistani security officials. This is why so many people mistakenly support the Taliban/Al Queida in Pakistan - they see the corruption of their government, they see the duplicity of western governments, they see billions in aid come flooding into their country yet they continue to be surrounded by poverty. . . Is it any wonder extreemism flourishes there ? And whats worse, because Pakistan is a nuclear power, we have to continue supporting them in case the terrorists get their hands on a nuclear device. . . Bilions of pounds that should go to the indigenous people of this country. . . . Disgracefull

kevin
So what not our problem

hollywoodbowden
Nice to see the business in Pakistan are still open unlike the ones here so we will send them more aid so be prepared for drink and petrol to go up again

peter
Not our problem. I do not recall any sympathy from Pakistan when we suffered the three day week and were all struggling. They waste their resources on "projects" like the Taliban so let them struggle. I do not care. Peter. Holmfirth.

No doubt we will be sending them more aid to help them cope!
