Prisoner Killed After Shooting Three Guards
A notorious inmate who stole a guard's gun and then shot three of them before barricading himself inside the jail has been killed by special forces.
Police said Samuel Sheinbein seriously wounded two of the guards before a stand-off where he then opened fire again as special forces raided the Sharon Prison in Israel.
The 34-year-old American had fled to Israel after committing a gruesome murder in Maryland in 1997 and his case sparked a high-profile row between the two allies.
He was tried in Israel in 1999 and sentenced to 24 years in prison for killing and dismembering 19-year-old Alfred Enrique Tello Jr.
He confessed to strangling Tello with a rope and hitting him several times with a sharp object.
Sheinbein then dismembered the body with an electric saw and burned it, authorities said.
He was 17 at the time of the murder and could have faced a life sentence in Maryland.
Aaron Needle, who was another teenager charged over the killing, committed suicide while in jail in the state.
The US wanted to extradite Sheinbein but he was able to stay in Israel after a year-long battle under a law that prevented the extradition of its citizens.
His father, Saul, was born in Israel and Sheinbein qualified for citizenship under the country's "Law of Return".
Israel refused to extradite him and the move angered Maryland authorities, briefly threatening US aid to the country.
It later changed its laws to allow the extradition of Israeli citizens on condition that they are returned to Israel to serve any sentence imposed.
