Royal Nurse: Radio Gives £320K To Family Fund

A memorial fund for the family of the dead nurse who was the victim of the royal hoax call has been set up by the radio station responsible for the prank.
Southern Cross Austereo, the parent company of radio station 2Day FM, said the remainder of the profits for 2012 should go to a memorial fund to benefit Jacintha Saldhana's family.
The sum is expected to amount to AUS$500,000 (£326,000).
It has also cancelled its Christmas party, saying it would be "inappropriate" to go ahead with the celebrations, and would instead donate the money it would have spent to charity.
Rhys Holleran, SCA's chief executive, said: "We are very sorry for what has happened. It is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts continue to be with the family.
"We hope that by contributing to a memorial fund we can help to provide the Saldanha family with the support they need at this very difficult time."
A post-mortem examination on Ms Saldanha, who initially answered the prank call made to the hospital treating the Duchess of Cambridge, is being held today.
Ms Saldanha was found dead on Friday days after she was tricked by Australian radio hosts Mel Greig and Michael Christian, who called the King Edward VII Hospital in central London.
She transferred the presenters, believing they were the Queen and the Prince of Wales, to a colleague who divulged details about Kate's treatment for severe morning sickness.
Ms Saldanha, 46, from Bristol, was found dead in a block of nurses' flats close to the hospital, where she stayed while working in London.
MP Keith Vaz met her family on Monday and said they had been "devastated" by the loss of a "loving mother and a loving wife".
Flanked by Ms Saldanha's husband Benedict Barboza and her two teenage children, Mr Vaz said: "They miss her every moment of every day, but they are really grateful to the support of the British public and to the public overseas for the messages of support and kindness."
Mr Vaz has called for the hospital to provide the family with more support and to hold an inquiry.
His criticism came after the DJs broke their silence about the nurse's death.
Interviewed on Australian TV networks, the 2Day FM presenters said there had been a "tragic turn of events no-one could have predicted or expected".
Police in London have contacted their Australian counterparts with a view to interviewing the pair ahead of an inquest into Ms Saldanha's death.
In response to Mr Vaz's criticism the hospital said its chief executive John Lofthouse had spoken to the nurse's husband on Friday by phone and offered to meet him whenever he wanted.
Under Australian regulations, the permission of anyone on the receiving end of a radio prank must be sought before the call can be broadcast.
The hospital has denied that anyone within its senior management or media unit was contacted.
The radio station insists appropriate checks were conducted before the pre-recorded item was broadcast.
Ms Saldanha was originally from Mangalore in southwest India, according to reports which have named her children as daughter Lisha, 14, and son Junal, 16.
Scotland Yard said the post-mortem would be held at Westminster Mortuary and it was likely an inquest would be opened and adjourned at Westminster Coroner's Court later this week
The Duchess of Cambridge has cancelled an appearance at the UK premiere of The Hobbit tomorrow because of her pregnancy sickness but The Duke of Cambridge will attend.

Jak Hodgkins
Do we have to call her the 'radio prank nurse' she has a name!!!

Jasmin Louise
My thoughts exactly! It's bad journalism.

stewgwyn
...and totally bloody disrespectful, but hey, who the hell seems to care anymore ?

Louisa Gieldon
It is lazy and disrespectful to refer to her like this. So much of our press does that now

Lorgar Aurelian
They assume we are that stupid we won't know who they mean otherwise.

Louisa Gieldon
Lots of the media talks down to us - the lowest common denominator seems to be the style they favour. The "One Show" is on as i type and it sounds so childish! I wouldn't talk to a classroom of 5 year olds in the way they are talking to their viewers. Atrocious.

The thing i dont like about phone pranks is that their too easy.peaple are hard to distiguish over the phone ,i know i sometimes dont recognize friends phoning.they are cheap and tacky.the phone can be a used to frighten peaple.i know ive been set up by a freind several times.which i will tell below.anyway maybe they ought to be treated as a form of bullying though these djs im sure didnt mean to cause harm.id like to ask peaple , do you think the law should be changed to protect peaple against hoax callers.

Gordon Wright
Shaun, I agree with pretty much everything you say in the above comment. As for changing the law, according to the article above, Australian regulations require that the permission of the "victim" be sought before transmission. I must confess that, till now, I was completely unaware of this. Since the hospital deny any contact with the radio station, it would appear they are already in breach of their own laws....

shaun spencer
I was phoned up by an angry man being abusive and threatening to come round and have a go at me.i had no idea who it was and was quiet perterbed by the call.enough to phone bt to find out where the call came from.it transpired that it was a phoneline that you can phone or text to and have a recording sent to a freind or foe.in this case it was mr angry.anyway it turned out to be a freind of mine whose a regular hoaxer.but on this occasion i didnt find it funny at all and was surprized it was allowed.i remember thinking how my other half might of reacted if she had picked up the phone.anyway has anyone else on here received such a prank call? And how did you react?

shaun spencer
Im not specifically referring to something to be broadcast but these phone line things. i refer to above.im wondering what pranks are funny and what isnt.the story above i seriously didnt like, so i wondered if anyone here has had a similar experience to me or even this unfortionate nurse.

shaun spencer
My other went out for the day and went to a freinds for what i was told was a serious chat.later her freind phoned me up and said" shaun ive got something to tell you and announced that my other half was pregnent and had had a pregnency test.well you can imagine how i reacted and spent the rest of the day in shock, worry and more shock and panic.only later when my other half and our hoaxer freind came back did they tell me it was a joke.i spent nearly 24 hrs panicking.they thought it hilarious as did i much later on but more out of relief than anything else.

Valerie Wood
Shaun a while ago I kept getting weird phone calls. When I picked up nobody said anything and yet I could hear rustling noises. I got one of those rape alarms and when it happened again blew the whistle down the phone. Whoever it was never rang back LOLOL

Tricky One
Have you listened to this call Shaun?

simon calvert
Valerie did it occur to you it might be somone accidentally dialling you from their pocket ..the phantom rustler....and you got a rape alarm for this...!crikey

shaun spencer
The point is simon that this mysterious caller to valerie was enough to scare her.

shaun spencer
Tricky which call are you referring to.obviously i ve heard the call the djs made.

simon calvert
I get more frightening ppi calls every day Shaun. If nobody said anything I'm pointing out it could have been a pocket dialer, I've had the same, many times, I tried to call back but no answer ,in the end somone did and they had programmed the wrong number in their phone and I was accidentally being called.... Some people just over react.some people don't.....some people have good reason to suspect they are being harassed, if so call the police.

Valerie Wood
The scariest thing for me was that at the time I was very young living alone in my first house and the calls were always very late at night and the eerie silence and rustling noises freaked me out.

Valerie Wood
and Simon no it was no accidental caller otherwise it wouldn't have been so regular and so late at night.

simon calvert
So, did you call the police or just rely on your magical whistle?

Valerie Wood
No Simon I did go to the police and it was them that suggested the whistle

simon calvert
That's nice of them, they didn't offer to have the call traced then?

Valerie Wood
yes of course they did Simon but they could not trace it. We are talking about a long while ago technology was not that great then

simon calvert
And then you never received another call due to your whistle.........hmmmmmm...not sure I believe this one...

Valerie Wood
Sorry to disappoint you Simon but it was true and very, very scary. Whether the whistle worked or they just found someone else to target I will never know

Louisa Gieldon
Shaun I am pretty gullible and take everything at face value so i an easily tricked. I don't find the examples you gave funny-they were rather sinister, much worse than what the djs did, i think.

shaun spencer
Yes louisa.the mr angry one i found frightening so i was glad my other half didnt answer it.its actually legal though.its actually an insane sounding man shouting at you.where as i guess i had to laugh at the pregnency one..but these were both by a freind.its her sense of humour.

Lorgar Aurelian
I've had one of those phone calls. You got my daughter pregnant was the one. Never did find out who set it up but it was quite unsettling. Even though i knew with my luck at the time it would have been an immaculate conception.

shirley sutton
Valerie there was a person prosecuted for assault for blowing whistle down the phone at someone!!!!

shaun spencer
Yes lorgar.thats precisely the sort of call you can receive now.is it funny.at least the person who played the trick on me owned up.are your absolutly sure you didnt get this girl pregnent though.lol

Valerie Wood
yes Shirley I would have probably been done in today's world but back then the human rights bods didn't have so much power :)

Louisa Gieldon
Lorgar, have you been a bad boy? Seriously these calls do sound horrible. I am really gullible and would fall for them completely!

shaun spencer
Not nice at all louisa.i phoned bt about it thinking it would be illegal, but was told by bt they come from abroad so cant be legistlated.

Mark Hussey
You can go to telephone perfance service to stop these type of calls

Robert Hare
It wont stop international or out of area calls and why would a hospital switch board use caller display??

davenlesley
Mark Yeah. Just like it stops all the do you want double glazing, new kitchen or bathroom calls now, I don't think

Mark Hussey
Wot is the worst trick you have ever done and did it backfire on you?

Mark Hussey
The worst one done was on my dad .when i was on over seas posting with the army my late stepmother talked my late gf katya to leting her have two unused embyros for cash i onley found out at thanksgiveing when one girl knocked my dad out when he hit her sister.thay have been dumped on me until thay get to 21

Louisa Gieldon
Well that's interesing and appropriate Mark. Thanks for that!

Mark Hussey
Lousia my stepmother shot herself

Louisa Gieldon
Sorry to hear that Mark but i still don't understand

Mark Hussey
Lousia she left behind three 14yr old girls

Pauline Dickenson
Not sure about giving money - understand this poor lady's husband has a profession and capable of supporting his family - deepest sympathy for what has happened - but do not like the idea of people being asked to donate money

I feel uneasy about it as well

shirley sutton
I agree don't see why they have to set up a fund for this

shirley sutton
We're they still together as a family being as she lived in accommodation. Near the hospital and family in Bristol?

shirley sutton
It was just a question surely she could have worked nearer to home seems strange she was in London and family in Bristol it's a reasonable question to ask

Carol Warner
Shaun Spencer you are absolutely right about prank calls being bullying. You will find in life t hat those without wit will always humiliate someone for a cheap laugh.

hollywoodbowden

Jasmin Louise
Your full of compassion eh? What a ridiculous thing to say.

davenlesley
Spot On Jasmin. It is very easy for hwb to criticise. Just wait until he or someone close has been there then he will understand the stupidity of his remarks

hollywoodbowden
No hanging yourself over a prank is stupid

Gordon Wright
Are you for real ???. What an idiotic and disgraceful thing to say..........

hollywoodbowden
Yes I am it was a prank call at the end of the day no need to top your self over it

Louisa Gieldon
If you have been personally affected by a suicide then i will excuse your cruel remark as you may be carrying baggage. If you have not been affected by this issue, then you should be rather ashaned of what you have said. I do not think the djs ahould be hounded and have been very clear about that, but this poor woman does not dserve such callous remarks

Jo Brierley
You really are a nice piece of work aren't you!

wickhampatrick
I see the Australians are getting like the Americans now, using money to cover up their guilt! As long as the two DJ's don't get any work in TV or Radio again as they are totally evil in their so-called prank! Yes maybe Mrs Saldanha's morals and respect for others were far greater than the idiot DJ's, but that's the big problem with society, nobody want's to be responsible for their actions anymore, it's always someone else's fault! They deserve everything they get!

Mark Hussey
Leave us yanks out of this

hollywoodbowden
She obviously never thought of her kids and husband before doing what she did suicide is selfish

Louisa Gieldon
hollywood that is a very cruel statement. Suicides are usually in no fit state to consider the wider issues of their actions. Many even feel that their families will be better of without them, such is their distorted reality. To say that is unfair and ignorant. Try to be kinder.

hollywoodbowden
Am not trying to be horrible just saying its an over the top reaction

shaun spencer
Hollywood.its very insensative your comment.this poor woman was desparate enough to take her own life.how desparate do you have to be.

Jo Brierley
You are clearly in the fortunate position of never having felt suicidal Hollywood. I envy you!! Unless you have gone through it you will not understand and there is no point trying to make someone understand because they can't. As such I do not believe a one off incident would make thsi woman commit suicide, it would have been the last straw, on top of any number of issues. You often feel it is selfless to remove yourself as the burden and with people feeling you are selfish I guess we are right.

Louisa Gieldon
Agreed Jo.

Rose Burns
Suicide is terrible if Mrs Saldanha was thinking about her family she still felt bad enough to go ahead. Some cultures and races are proud and being involved in this prank would of been embarrassing and humiliating for her. She would of been hounded by the media and felt desperate and ashamed. RIP x

Lisa Marie Williams
In that case shouldnt the medaia get some of the blame for hounding her?

shirley sutton
Has any one actually proved she committed suicide and if so was it over the prank or for another reason? Very sad for her family but everyone just assumed what happened as no mention of a note etc

shaun spencer
Thats what ive been asking on here shirley. Could even have been an accident.but i dont think the authoritys would announce a suicide if it wasnt.also the other nurse involved is non existent at the moment.she ll have to testify at the inquest.but it could end up being an accident.

Neil C
Why give the money to the family ;O/ People do this down to depression and stress.

david
hold the bus my mother died because of a prank.nobody gave us thousands of pounds,,sorry but this is wrong..go see this nurses family are see if they are still sad or doing handspings... this country realy is in a mess

shaun spencer
I wonder though if id just split up with a girlfriend id have taken the joke the same way espescially if i was in an arranged marriage.

shaun spencer
Everytime i put a comment relating this story to arranged marriages im being censored.

Mark Hussey
Probley think it is raceist. By the way thay are cathlics

Mark Hussey
Maybe radio station fear a law suit and that is why thay are paying

Sorry but there is no way its right to put all the blame of this woman's death on these two people. She was obviously very ill. .I am sure a mother of that age and experience with two children would not take her own life breaking her children's hearts and possibly damaging them for life because of a silly prank. She was not even the one who gave the information ! Absolutely ridiculous. Rip but to put all this on the heads of the dj s is beyond a joke.
Andrea Hill

why did she have to be ill. Different culture and values. Its a tragic case, and those two in australia, boring immature idiots.
simon calvert
10:39am on 11/12/2012
Andrea, yes it is tragic, it was stupid and wrong to ring a hospital as a prank.....however, it in no way makes them responsible for someone taking their life there is only one person responsible for that unfortunately that is Ms Saldanha. No matter what her culture, if you take your own life over this, well, you may as well wrap everyone up in cotton wool and never speak to them. As a nurse she must have dealt with far worse so things don't add up that this was the sole reason for her to take her life. Yes, the DJs were stupid, immature, thoughtless but many many people are and we all have to deal with them everyday.

I agree with Simon there is more to this than meets the eye and since when did she become the royal nurse. Enough of this now lets move on what's done is done. I think the hospital has more to answer than the prancsters from Australia
