Recording Of Obscene Mel Gibson Rant Released
An expletive-ridden rant by Mel Gibson has been released by the Hollywood screenwriter who accused the actor of making anti-Semitic remarks and being out of control.
The recording, given to US entertainment website The Wrap by Joe Eszterhas, was allegedly made in December at Gibson's home in Costa Rica by the screenwriter's 15-year-old son, Nick.
In the audio, Gibson is heard shouting at Eszterhas for not completing a script of their joint film, The Maccabees.
"Why don't I have a first draft of The Maccabees? What the **** have you been doing?" he screams.
As well as swearing at his houseguests, the Oscar-winner directs his anger at ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva who is the mother of his two-year-old daughter, Lucia.
"I go to work, you're getting paid, I'm not! ****! I am earning money for a filthy little (expletive) who takes advantage of me! Just like every (expletive)!"
Towards the end of the two-and-a-half minute recording, the actor demands: "Who wants to eat? Who the **** wants to eat? (string of expletives)."
The release of the recording follows a dispute between Gibson and Basic Instinct screenwriter Ezsterhas who were working on a film about the Jewish hero Judah Maccabee - who Gibson was to play.
Earlier this month, Ezsterhas wrote a nine-page letter accusing the movie star of hating Jews, claiming he only announced the project to "deflect continuing charges of anti-Semitism which have dogged you".
He also claimed Gibson was out of control and threatened violence to his ex-girlfriend, Grigorieva.
The Maccabee film has been put on hold by Warner Bros. A spokesperson said: "We are analysing what to do with the project."
Last week Gibson responded to Eszterhas' allegations in a statement, saying they were "utter fabrications".
He added that the first draft of The Maccabee script had been "substandard".
Explaining why he released the recording, Eszterhas told The Wrap it was because "Mel publicly called me a liar."
He added: "I am not going to stand around and be called a liar".
Eszterhas said his son, Nick, was so "terrified" the night of Gibson's rampage in Costa Rica that he "took a kitchen knife and slept with it under his pillow".
The veteran screenwriter said he wants Gibson to get help because he fears someone will be harmed by his violent temper.
"The behaviour on this tape shows that he is out of control, he is potentially dangerous," Eszterhas said.
"I don't want to cause him damage but I want to prevent damage. If he doesn't get help or seek it, then somebody is going to get hurt."
Reportedly, Gibson may now reportedly sue the screenwriter for secretly recording him.
According to US website TMZ, his lawyers are looking into whether his right of privacy was breached by the release of the audio.
Eszterhas was at the Hollywood actor's home in Costa Rica with his son and wife.
Other houseguests present included screenwriter Randall Wallace, his girlfriend Elizabeth Topp and Gibson's friend Brad Hillstrom. House staff and their children were also present.
