Reg Traviss thankful to Sheridan Smith for support during rape trial
Amy Winehouse's last lover Reg Traviss has paid tribute to his actress girlfriend Sheridan Smith for supporting him after he was falsely accused of rape.
The filmmaker was taken to court over claims he twice assaulted a 27-year-old female friend while she was drunk and sleeping at his apartment in London on New Year's Eve, but a jury cleared him of any wrongdoing on Thursday.
Traviss, who was dating Winehouse when she died from alcohol poisoning last year, has now thanked his new girlfriend, TV and stage star Smith, for sticking by his side through the ordeal.
He says, "She has been a real strength throughout. I am really relieved it's all over."
Traviss is now calling for anonymity for rape case defendants, adding, "I never did it. The last nine months has been crazy. It feels like anyone can make a complaint and have their day in court. A train starts running and in this case the person who made the complaint wasn't investigated."
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had alleged she was so drunk she could not stand after their night out, but her story unravelled as security footage showed her walking steadily when she and Traviss left a bar.
