Richard Gere Mistaken For Tramp By Tourist
A French tourist gave a homeless man a slice of pizza without realising it was Richard Gere playing a tramp in a Hollywood movie.
Karine Gombeau, 42, reportedly spotted the actor, a woollen hat pulled over his ears, rifling through bins for food as she left a pizzeria in Manhattan with her husband and 15-year-old son.
She told the New York Post she felt sorry for the man and handed him a bag containing leftovers from an "enormous" pizza they had been unable to finish.
"What's in the bag?" the multi-millionaire star is said to have asked as she handed it over.
"I tried to tell him in English but it came out half in French," Mrs Gombeau said.
"I said, 'Je suis désolée (I am sorry), but the pizza is cold.'"
Gere, 64, reportedly replied: "Thank you so much. God bless you!"
Mrs Gombeau left without knowing it was the world famous actor, who was filming his new movie Time Out Of Mind, a drama about a New Yorker who loses his home.
It was only when a hotel worker handed her a copy of the New York Post two days later that she realised who it was.
Inside was a picture of her handing pizza to a dishevelled-looking Gere.
"It was magical ... it's crazy, this story," she told the paper.
"It's unimaginable that something like this could happen."
She added: "I think he's very handsome, even at his age.
"Pretty Woman was not my favourite movie, but I really loved Chicago."
