Riot Police And Protesters Clash In Madrid
Police have fired rubber bullets at demonstrators in Madrid where a march of thousands took place in protest against new austerity measures.
Tens of thousands of public employees and trade union members have been marching in dozens of Spanish cities to protest the latest batch of austerity measures imposed by the government.
In Madrid, protesters gathered outside the People's Party offices of Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy before clashing with riot police who also used batons to disperse the crowds.
Amid fears of more violence, barricades have been put around Puerta del Sol, the city's main square, where the protest camp is set up.
Yesterday, the ruling conservative Popular Party used its majority in Parliament to push through the new round measures which include a rise in sales taxes and a wage cut for civil servants. Furious demonstrators punctured the tyres on police riot vans while civil servants blocked traffic in Madrid.
Many also carried Spanish flags bearing black bows for mourning and banners saying "No to the cuts" and "You have ruined us". A group of firefighters in the northern town of Ovieda stripped naked in front of the cameras in protest at the cuts they claim they have been forced to endure.
Yesterday, the Spanish government published details of the 100bn euro financial assistance agreement between Spain and the eurozone aimed at shoring up the country's struggling banks.
The banks' bailout was first announced in June, but it has failed to ease worries about Spain's public finances.

Noticed there were police and firefighters protesting with the protestors as well. Thats when govts got real problems when the poice and army turn on them. The arab spring is creeping over europe in a different form. Divide and conquer seems to be the order of the day. All part of the Global elite New World order plans for ultimate one world govt one world army one world religion. .Prophesied in book of revelation 2000 years ago. Beware in the future of some charismatic world leader (false messiah) who promises "peace"-- but it will be at the cost of your souls. Revelation: if you dont have the mark of the beast you will not be able to trade (buy or sell)-its getting closer and partly already here ( cashless society, licenced and permit control of work) . Stay free

Not really sure Christianity is the way to go to provide freedom for the world's population. . . . Not given all the millions of innocent people murdered by Christians during the 13 crusades, or the Witch Burnings (never read Malleus Maleficarun ? Thought not) or persecution of Jewish people, or what about the religious wars between catholic and protestant. . . . Mmmmmm. Not a very good legacy. . . Now then, if you want a faith that brings freedom and intellectual/emotional understanding. . . Worship Lilith, Adams first wife, liberator of the oppressed, rebel against authority

Of course Christianity has all the answers. People such as Stevie May just aren't convicted as to the Truth, so they resort to man's means such as useless protests and empty words.

Direct action is the last line of defence the people have against the state. This enforced austerity is immoral and people dont have to accept it, after all it wasnt the people who caused this financial crisis. Imagine if all the people of Europe rioted against their deceitful governments in one unified co-ordinated action ? There isnt a government, police force or army in the world that could stop them. Support the protestors !

It's called revolution, Steve, and they don't need to be riot-based although the authorities WILL provoke a riot (as we see in Spain and all too often elsewhere) in order to discredit a movement for change. Like in the coutries in Europe and elsewhere we need a more generalised struggle to kick this government into touch and form a party that will implement policies that benefit the majority. There's lot of strikes going on and pending, but these campaigns should come together into one - unions and anti-cuts campaigns - into one big movement, which some are trying to organise.
