Roache: Abuse Victims 'Punished For Past Sins'

The actor who plays Coronation Street's Ken Barlow has seemingly claimed victims of sexual abuse are being punished for their behaviour in "previous lives".

Bill Roache made the comments in a television interview, during which he said famous men can be "caught in this trap" by young female fans who follow their movements.

Speaking to New Zealand's TVNZ, he said of the victims: "If you accept that you are pure love ... and therefore live that pure love, these things won't happen to you."

He was then pressed by reporter Garth Bray, who asked: "To some people that sounds perhaps like you're saying victims bring things on themselves. Is that what you're saying?"

The 80-year-old replied: "No, not quite, but then yes I am. Everything that happens to us is the result of what we have been in previous lives."

Roache's co-star of 30 years, Michael Le Vell, has been suspended from the ITV soap after he was charged with 19 child sex offences.

Le Vell, whose real name is Michael Turner, appeared in court last month and was bailed until his next appearance in the dock at Manchester Crown Court.

During his interview with TVNZ, Roache insisted: "Everyone's innocent until they're proven guilty."

He described paedophilia as "absolutely horrendous" but added: "There's a fringe here ... particularly pop stars who have these groupies, these girls, who are sexually active and sexually mature.

"They don't ask for their birth certificate and they don't know what age they may be.

"They're certainly not grooming them and exploiting them but they can be caught in this trap."

He added: "These people are instantly stigmatised. Some will be innocent and some will not, but until such time as (any offence) is proven, there should be anonymity for both.

"If someone has done something wrong, the law should take its course. But whether they're proven guilty or not, we should never be judgemental about anyone.

"We shouldn't go round condemning. We should be forgiving about everything."

what do you think?

Another good reason why 'actors' shouldn't be the voice of society. Or TV magizines/programs

If people are responsible for bad things which happen to them because of activity during a previous life, then why did all those people die during the Black Death of 1349 - wearing period clothing perhaps ? Because they used the Strip Farming method ?

Where is this man coming from. Taking his comments at face value, every disaster or horrendous event that has taken place on this earth is due to the victims having done something wrong in an earlier life. This ignores the fact that the world's population has increased at a phenomenal rate over the years. Is he suggesting that there is a bank of human beings somewhere other than earth that the simple act of copulation by humans releases?

Well perhaps he's in on the big secret and that there is a huge facility that produces lab bred humans. Who are given false memories and history, and then integrated into civilisation with out anyone knowing. But they have had ideas implanted in their brains so that when the time comes they become like a zombie army.... Hold on a minute, That sounds like a plot for a good film.

Isn't television wonderful; it provides a soap-box for imbeciles to spout garbage to millions; such an advance over Speaker's Corner in London, where they could maybe harangue a couple of hundred! As an added bonus, it diverts far too much of the nation's resources into the pockets of said imbeciles instead of paying it to those who are actually needed, such as doctors, nurses ... and yes ... bin men!

I bet that is not the end for him. Too many people think that Coronation Street is another book of the Bible or whatever holy book they read and that what is portrayed in that programme is the absolute gospel truth

After re-reading this twaddle I'm beginning to wonder where this empathy (or sympathy) comes from. I would have said that forgiveness could be a Christian trait and past lives could be seen as another believe system - but he didn't seem to have that agenda.

All this mumbo-jumbo about past lives etc, what planet is he on. At the end of the day, we are just animals. I believe that if you are attracted to children, and commit a sexual crime against a child, you should expect to be put down. End of story.

Paedophilia is invariably wrong and perpetrators, if caught, deserve whatever punishment is meted out to them. However, how many men have been in a situation where a girl who looks and behaves like a woman thrusts herself on him only for him to find later that she was under the age of consent. The phrase " There but for the Grace of God" springs to mind
