Rochdale Pensioner 'Murdered In His Home'

Police in Rochdale have launched a murder inquiry after an 84-year-old man was found dead in his home.

A post-mortem examination showed Vincent Kershaw died as a result of head injuries.

Forensics officers are examining his house in Willows Lane, Milnrow.

Detective Inspector Iain Butler from the Major Incident Team said: "A team of officers are still at the scene and we are working on establishing a motive. There are a number of lines of inquiry and at this stage, we cannot rule out robbery.

"Mr Kershaw was known to carry large quantities of cash when he was out and when his body was examined, there was no sign of his wallet.

"We are keen to piece together Mr Kershaw's final movements. We know that Vinny travelled by bus and taxi in Rochdale and Shaw in Oldham. 

"He was seen collecting his pension at Milnrow Post Office on Dale Street at 10am on Thursday, October 4, and was also seen buying groceries at Tesco Express on Dale Street at 1pm.

"If anyone saw Mr Kershaw that day and has any information as to his movements leading up to the discovery of his body on October 14, please phone police."

Neighbour Eileen Platt told Sky News she has lived next door to Mr Kershaw for 18 years. It was her husband who alerted police after Mr Kershaw failed to put his bin out as usual.

"Vinny was a very smart gentleman, always well presented," she told Sky News.

"We're all just very, very shocked. There are a lot of older people who live around here and they're all scared.

"Just to think that somebody who's here one day is just gone is just awful."
