Royal Prank Call Nurse 'Was Found Hanged'
The nurse who died after a hoax call to a hospital treating the Duchess of Cambridge was found hanged, Sky sources say.
Jacintha Saldanha was discovered on Friday morning in her room at staff accommodation near the hospital in west London. An inquest is due to open on Thursday.
"If it adds anything to this very tragic story it indicates a very determined bid to kill herself, rather than what some people describe as a cry for help," said Sky's Martin Brunt.
"I also understand ... that a suicide note was left in which she, we believe, gave some explanation for the actions that she's thought to have taken."
The 46-year-old mother-of-two was found dead days after an Australian radio station duped staff at King Edward Vll Hospital into revealing details of the Duchess's condition. She was suffering from acute morning sickness.
Two presenters on Sydney's 2Day FM radio station called the hospital pretending to be the Queen and Prince Charles.
Ms Saldanha, who took the call, transferred it to the ward where the Duchess was being treated. A second nurse then divulged details of her condition.
The post-mortem to establish the cause of Ms Saldanha's death began on Tuesday and has concluded, but the result will not be officially announced until a hearing at Westminster Coroner's Court on Thursday morning.
The death is not being treated as suspicious and the inquest is expected to be opened and adjourned as inquiries are continuing.
Initial official statements suggested Ms Saldanha was alive but unconscious when she was discovered. However, it is now understood she was found dead.
Speaking at Prime Minister's Questions, David Cameron said: "She clearly loved her job, loved her work, cared deeply about the health of her patients, and what's happened is a complete tragedy. There are many lessons that need to be learned."
Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) is to start running adverts again on 2Day FM on Thursday. Until the end of the year all profits the station makes from advertising will be donated to a memorial fund established in aid of Ms Saldanha's family.
A minimum contribution of AUS$500,000 (£326,000) will be made, the company said.
Earlier this week Ms Saldanha's husband and two children paid tribute to a "loving mother and loving wife".
It is understood the family are making arrangements to return her body to her native India. A private memorial service is expected to be held later this week.
what do you think?
What if she was murderd and made to look like suicide?
jeni, I think the public would never know and the same with the hospital statement that no action was taken, just their word. OMEN.
It doesn't seem like a reason anyone would do such a thing, does it? Why would someone go to all that trouble because of a radio program? It's not an embarrassment to the hospital or anyone else. It was just a bad choice of non-joke.

Adrian, it was an embarrassment to the hospital,William and Kate, Charles and of course the Queen.
Jeni, i know people love conspiracy stories but that's silly stuff
Some might say this was a slight over-reaction. I think if we all committed suicide over something as trivial as this then I would not be here writing this. And you, dear reader, would not be reading this news article.
What is trivial to one person, might not be so trivial to another.
We do not know what other issues there may have been and this could have been the one that tipped the scales
Geoff my sentiments entirely I think this was the straw that broke her. She wasn't reprimanded by her bosses they stood by her gave them support so Im certain there was underlying issues to. Its to easy to just blame the DJs for the prank. Anyone whos ever worked on a building site, factory , coal mine or even been a bloke working with women or visa versa have all suffered worse pranks
Adj, they may have suffered worse on the face of it. But where they the perceived object of derision of the entire world ? Where they the victim of a "prank" that involved royalty ? You really can't compare this to anything that you or I have experienced.
Had it been trivial, it wouldn't have made global news, I suppose...
Just let her Rip now as we do not need to know how people die wots next vedeo.
To suggest she was so traumatised by a prank phone call is utterly ludicrous. Surely it is much more likely that she couldn't cope with becoming the centre of the latest hysterical media storm. With the paparazzi all camped outside the hospital playing their usual unpleasant tricks to get ahead in the race for trivia. She was also probably disciplined or at least spoken too by her superiors. Or yes, she passed on a prank phone call and thought the shame was worth leaving her two young children and husband..
Why are so many people so anxious to defend the actions of this radio station??. Let us not forget, it was the phone call that triggered the media storm. No phone hoax, no problem.................
Further to my last, people do not think rationally when taking their own life. It usually occurs when "the balance of the mind is disturbed". It is the thing that causes that imbalance that is usually to blame.
Gordon, its not a question of defending the radio station...yes they were wrong too phone a hospital for a prank, however, to hold them responsible for someones suicide, when 99.999999% of people would have not done so its irrational, unfair and damn right deluded.
tricky, yes it was one prank phone call but such a small issue became worldwide, every newspaper making a huge issue outta nothing. between the radio station, hospital, press and royal family her world caved in.
Simon, Tried to answer your comment but system will not accept, perhaps it is too long, will try again later
Simon, They may not be responsible for the lady taking her own life but they certainly take the blame for kick starting the chain of events which ended in tragedy......
They may have been part of a sequence of events that does not mean they should take any blame, whether she killed herself over this alone which is very doubtful or due to a cumulation of events or a serious mental condition, remember Gary speed, was everyone blaming his wife or the football club...no....people are just wanting to make a villain out of this its just a witch hunt.
Sorry Simon, I think by offering to pay £326,000 to the lady's family, they are accepting their share of guilt in this matter. Nobody pays out that kind of money if they feel they have done nothing wrong. We will have to agree to disagree on this one............
Fair enough... :-)
Gordon, Ali, Simon I agree with you all. Apart from the compensation argument. The cynic in me feels that is just lip service to the baited ranting public/media.. To me a meaningless gesture.
I guess we,ll learn more thursday.other nurse invovled still quite.hospital busy defending themselves and blaming two scapegoats from australia who indirectly are raising loads of money to give to deceaseds family.to makes things better for them.bad all round this
There is a lot more to all this there is still a media restraint in place and information deliberately being withheld this morning on the news stated she was found hanging and was cut down but at that point was still alive and died in medical care .Nothing about her past or personal problems and they are trying to tell us that no one at the hospital Spoke to her over her mistake .sorry I find That very very hard to swallow .Someone higher up must have mentioned something no organisation would allow something like that without to go unchecked
When my stepmother killed herself it was more than onething wot made her do it even low she had three 14yr old kids
So let me get this straight ur wife was blown up by chechen rebels, and u married her father who is 6 foot 5 and is in the Russian special forces. Then 2 relatives also got killed in new York being mugged. And now suicide. Just all sounds a bit syspicious.
Whats going on here.i dont understand.mark says he lost his stepmother to suicide and peaple are ridiculing him.sorry to hear about your loss mark.
Blimey change of comment here but ive just seen a village near us on telly.on 4 seven clovelly.about the flooding here.
Just to say ali if you make things up on here you would need a good mem .shaun hows the floods
Click on your name, everything you've said is there for all to see Mark. It is getting kinda silly!!
Some people on here are in a world of their own. I sense more mental instability than in any nurse that may have been under pressure.
Stew ali and tricky. I've clicked and read and feel the same as you all. Was going to post the same thing yesterday nut knew i'd get about a hundred minuses for it. Mark I really am not trying to be unkind, but you may be under loads of stress yourself. If just a chunk of that is true, then i hope you are getting help and looking after yourself. It's not coming across ad being completely grounded in anyones's reality but you own
Agreed Louisa, I get a bit wound up and may go OTT at times, but some things just don't gel. There is one on here, and if I'm wrong I'm sorry, who managed to comment all through the ordeal of several feet of floodwater rushing through his house (as if). Many sympathised, and have since asked how he is coping but there hasn't been a single reply ! Amid all the comments about the nurse,he's just raised the subject again ! Call me cynical, but it doesn't add up !
This is all so over the top
Maybe the poor woman had been having a really tough time and this just tipped her over the edge.No-one knows
She left a note. Some light may yet be shed on her reasons. Whatever they are she must have been suffering terribly, poor woman. All very sad.
What a mess. Maybe there were other reasons; maybe she also happened to be depressed; perhaps she had marital difficulties; maybe she was ill. It's not for me to speculate. Either way, her story went global. I don't share her culture and I don't know her beliefs - maybe for her, being involved in such a controversy involving the royal family carried huge shame. Poor woman.
Yes movvi.we'll learn more thursday.
Only seen two photos, so I know that's not enouh togo on, but she looks really careworn and unhappy
Louisa, The one on show here looks a bit ike a passport photo, If you think that's bad, you should see mine !!
Yes, pretty much everybody has a ''horror'' photo inside their passport.
