Russell Brand still battles drug cravings

Russell Brand would rather be a drug addict than a famous comedian and actor.

The funnyman, who previously battled drug addiction, made the shock confession while filming BBC Three documentary Russell Brand: From Addiction to Recovery, due to air this month.

In a clip obtained by The Sun newspaper, Brand watches a recording of himself smoking heroin in a small apartment in London's Hackney and, despite being clean from drugs for 10 years, the star admits he still has cravings and sometimes wishes he could give up his current life in favour of how he lived in his 20s.

In the documentary, he says, "This is when you know it's a disease. It doesn't matter that I was sat in that flat in Hackney and now I'm in the Savoy (Hotel). I'm jealous of me then. It doesn't make a difference to me. The money, the fame, the power, the sex, the women - none of it. I'd rather be a drug addict."

However, Brand insists he is well aware of the negative impact the toxic substances had on him and his loved ones.

He adds, "Heroin is a greedy drug, it'll take everything. First it'll take your money. Then it'll take your friends, your family, your car, your house. Then it's going to take bits of your body. In the end I used to be scoring with people that had eyes missing, limbs missing. You'll take it until it takes your life. It'll take everything until the last thing and you'll gladly give it that rather than give up the drugs."

He is not a famous comedian or actor, he is not a comedian or an actor - he is a waste of valuable oxygen.

Boring. Seems you wait until Brand's name is mentioned on the entertainment pages and you leap in with the same garbage. Change the record

I think he is honest and brave. He speaks directly and with intelligence about what it's like to be an addict. You do not have to think he's funny, but recognise the sense that he speaks on this issue please. He knows what he's talking about.

At least he's honest and doesn't pretend that 3 weeks in the Priory fixes it all.

The final para gives a very graphic description of the way drugs destroy the addict bit by bit, piece by piece.Young people should be given a card with this description printed on it every time they enter a place where drugs may be available. What I find incredible is how Brand, after giving this description still yearns to be a drug addict. Seems to suggest all the re-hab schemes in the world are a waste of time & money

That's the nature of addiction, i'm afraid. The craving may or may not go away. Good rehab gives you strategies to control th cravings. Getting clean doesn't take that long, it's stayong clean that is the real struggle. Russell may crave heroin for the rest of his llife but he knows what losses it will incur and continues not to use. Good luck to him and all the other people struggling with addiction.

I've never been a particular fan of Russell Brand the performer, but the way that he has dealt with his drug addiction problems as well as his apparent decent behavior during his recent divorce have made me respect him.
