Salmond Brands UK Ministers 'Lord Snooties'

Alex Salmond branded the UK Government "incompetent Lord Snooties" as he declared it was game on for the independence referendum.

The Scottish First Minister hit out at politicians at Westminster who he claimed were "unwilling to do what is best for Scotland".

With voters north of the border due to vote on the country's future in 2014, Mr Salmond insisted: "Now is the time for Scotland to choose, to seize a different future."

The First Minister used his speech to the SNP's annual conference in Perth to launch a furious attack on a UK Government hit by political woes in the last 24 hours.

Andrew Mitchell stood down as chief whip after admitting the row over his confrontation with police officers in Downing Street made his position untenable.

Meanwhile Chancellor George Osborne was forced to pay a £160 upgrade for his train ticket after he was caught sitting in first class with only a standard ticket.

To cheers from the audience Mr Salmond demanded: "Why on earth do we allow this incompetent bunch of Lord Snooties to be in positions of authority over our country?"

He added: "Westminster would put this first class nation in the second class carriages."

But the SNP leader declared: "No more second best for Scotland. It is time, it is past time, for a fresh start for our nation."

Mr Salmond told the conference: "Westminster has had its chance and Westminster has fallen short.

"It's not just that in Westminster and London we have a government that is unwilling to do what is best for Scotland. It is incapable of putting the people of Scotland first."

He continued his attack, hitting out at the UK Government's stewardship of the economy and its continued support for nuclear weapons.

"We face a Westminster government that is hell-bent on pulling our society apart at the seams," Mr Salmond said.

"Austerity, a one-way street with tax cuts for the rich and benefit cuts for the poor.

"Billions to be spent on new nuclear weapons while families struggle to heat their homes.

"What kind of brave new world is this?"

In his keynote conference address the First Minster declared: "Westminster is beyond salvation."

But he added: "Our social democratic Scotland can still be won."

With the independence referendum taking place in two years he said the choice before voters was clear.

Mr Salmond said: "Scotland can vote no and achieve nothing.

"Or we can vote yes to get the platform that we need."

Although a poll on Thursday showed just 30% of Scots supported leaving the UK, Mr Salmond insisted there was a majority in favour of some kind of constitutional change.

He told the packed auditorium: "Many want independence. Many want more powers.

"But have no doubt, once again the majority of our fellow citizens are for change."

And he said: "Over these next two years our task is clear. To tell the truth about Scotland and what we can achieve. To proclaim that we have, in ourselves, all we need to truly prosper.

"That is the platform on which we shall win independence for our country."

Sadly i fear that the utopia Mr Salmon dreams of will fall far short, as an english man who reguarly carries out work in Scotland the attitude of people towards me is bordering racist and it is not just in areas where you may expect it on being stopped by a policeman in my lorry his opening words were "an englishman in an Irish lorry christmas has come early" and he left me with the words "tell your paddy mates we'll be running operation juggernaut in the run up to Christmas but you can call it op paddy". I work all over europe and only in Scotland do i find this attitude I cannot be held responsible for what happened in the past yet some scots think i can

This will be interesting since most of Britain's oil reserves are in Scotland or Scottish waters.

But its 'dug' up by the American Oil companies who will disappear as soon as it dries up, in about 10-15 years! I think the reserves are mostly in international waters! It just comes ashore in Scotland. Anyway why should Scotland get their hands on the Oil reserves when it was British Taxpayers Money that paid for it in the 1st place? I think they have already got their fair share of the money! I've seen figures, however true, that only 300,000 Scots actually pay nett taxes.

i dont blame the scotish people for wanting to be independent. say what you like but the scotish ministers seem to at least put the welfare of their constituants before their own. free prescriptions free education to name two examples. they have their own gas and oil reserves so they are financially able to support themselves. they dont want tinpot dictators like cameron and his merry band of robbers and self serving charlatans telling them what to do like they do here ,best of luck to the scots oche eye the noooooo

Who pays for their ability to have free prescriptions, old age care and free uni tuition. The English with the absurd levy that we pay for every person. That money could just as easily be spent south of the border improving services here. If they go for independence then I would certainly hope that this infusion of money comes to a halt. Can't see why F*U*N*D*S is a non permissible word

If you check your history I think you will find that England, yes ENGLAND, bailed out a bankrupt Scotland over their bad investments in America! I know it happened a long time ago, but without that money there wouldnt even be a Scottish nation. Good luck to them, let them be Independant, but dont come back to the rest of Britain (England, NI and Wales) for another bail out!

What we need to do is to declare independence from England for both Wales and Scotland then simply erect a better version of Offa's dyke and a better version of Hadrian's wall to keep Wales Welsh and Scotland Scottish.
