Santa Shot In The Back At Toy Giveaway

A man dressed as Santa Claus is recovering after being shot in the back at a toy giveaway in America.

The attack was filmed by a television cameraman who watched in horror as the Santa lookalike keeled over in pain after being hit by pellets.

The victim - dressed in a traditional red Santa suit, hat and fluffy white beard - was struck at about 9.15am in southeast Washington.

The Santa was initially filmed striding joyfully down the street, waving at children and residents in houses.

He could be heard saying: "Man, this is awesome."

But shortly afterwards he said: "Oh, yes, Merry...", before it went silent for a moment and he stopped dead, turned and buckled - before letting out a loud groan.

"Somebody shot me," he said as he was surrounded by children who rushed out into the street to comfort him.

"Somebody shot me in the back .... I think somebody shot me with a pellet gun."

The white-bearded victim then fell briefly to one knee before standing up again and hunching over in pain.

"They're shooting," he told the children. A bystander pointed to his back, and the Santa said: "That's where they shot me, right there."

Washington fire department spokesman Timothy Wilson said the man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Gwendolyn Crump, the chief spokeswoman for Washington police, said the victim "heard a popping sound and felt a sharp pain in his body".

Police initially said he finished delivering the toys, but later said that was incorrect.

The man's name was not released, and police did not make any immediate arrests.
