Savile: Freddie Starr Offers To Talk To Police
Comedian Freddie Starr has said he is prepared to speak to police in connection with abuse allegations made against Jimmy Savile.
Mr Starr, who strongly denies any wrongdoing, appeared with Savile on an episode of the BBC television show Clunk Click in 1974 alongside a 14-year-old girl who has accused him of molesting her.
Ms Ward had told ITV she had been "horribly humiliated" by Starr, adding he had a "bad attack of wandering hands" when she met him.
Starr denied touching Karin Ward inappropriately and denied meeting her on the show. His lawyer issued a statement claiming he had been mistaken and he had appeared on the programme after all.
"Mr Starr cannot be expected to recollect every show that he has appeared on and to remember every person that he has ever met," he said.
"In respect of Karin Ward this was not a name that Freddie could remember and therefore had no recollection of meeting her.
"It would now appear from seeing footage of a Clunk Click show aired in 1974 that in fact Freddie was mistaken and therefore that he had in fact been on a Jimmy Savile show.
"However, this does not detract away from the fact that Freddie vigorously denies the awful allegation that has been made by Karin Ward which, despite this footage, is still totally unsupported and uncorroborated by any other evidence."
Speaking outside his home, the 69-year-old comedian said: "I have said from the word go that I wanted to be interviewed. I have always said that I wanted to be interviewed.
"I have got the press phoning me up to ask if I have been interviewed. I got sick of it. Everybody, the press, the police, people at the BBC, they knew that things were going on with Jimmy Savile.
"Everybody is guilty of this. You can put the finger on everybody at the BBC and the fella's (George Entwistle) only been in the job for four months. This fellow was at school when all this was happening."
A spokeswoman for Mr Starr said: "Freddie is prepared to be interviewed by the police, but his lawyer has been in touch with the person heading the investigation and they have no intention of questioning him.
"I asked him the direct question whether the police wished to question Mr Starr as we had heard from the Press that such questioning was imminent.
"(The officer) replied in writing 'We have said nothing of the sort. There has been much inaccurate speculation on such matters but should that be considered in the future I have cc'd in the Senior Investigating Officer so he is aware of your details.'
"It would therefore appear clear that the police currently have no intention to question Mr Starr who has continually denied the allegation made by Karin Ward.
"We have always maintained there is absolutely no corroborating evidence to support such a wild allegation. The confirmation from the police today that there is no intention to question Mr Starr at present supports this."
Scotland Yard declined to comment on the claims.
Mr Starr's announcement comes as news emerged that at least seven alleged victims of Jimmy Savile made complaints of sexual abuse against Savile while he was still alive.
Scotland Yard has admitted four police forces were aware in the 1980s of claims against the former TV presenter and DJ.
The first of the seven claims was made in the 1980s by a young girl, who said she had been subjected to an indecent assault at BBC TV Centre.
what do you think?

Adrian Wagstaff
I was just about to post a comment myself discussing "implanting or creating false memories" as the fields of psychology and psychiatry include. I decided not to bother until I saw the other reply to this comment. I included the fact that I can clearly remember events in 1974 without false memories and relatives have verified what I remembered. I was going to say some of the accusations appear to regard such things as stroking a victim's arms? Some of the accusations are worse but there are such things as false memories and even hysteria? Groups of people can all start believing the same things? I did mention the other week, Freddie Starr has always been something of an outrageous comedian or today he might be classed as an "Extreme Comedian"? Extreme Comedy? If he said something to a girl in 1974, she could very well have misinterpreted his sense of humour and through life, he must have learned to behave differently, like everyone else does, since then? I don't know if their memories are all true or not, I'm just commenting on these things.

shaun spencer
Thats interesting point adrian.something like the london bridge where everyone without knowing it walked in unison and made it wobble.

Juliecrumpton1234
What!!??

Adrian Wagstaff
I should probably not bother saying this but I was thinking more along the lines of Lemmings who believe they are walking over a cliff along a bridge yet the bridge disappeared thousands or millions of years ago.

shaun spencer
Peaple have a tendency to follow the crowd.and mass hysteria is the result.

Dave Harrison
Surprise surprise. After first denying that he had even met the girl he suddenly remembers that he did after all. I wonder how much else he has conveniently forgotten until presented with evidence the contrary. Two down but how many more to go??

Gordon Wright
I think you're being a little unfair Dave, (which is not like you, I have to say). As Starr's lawyer said, he cannot really be expected to remember every show he has ever appeared on, especially those that took place nearly 40 years ago. He did admit he was mistaken a week or so back when the footage was produced and if the Police are not planning to interview him it would seem they have no evidence at this time. Addditonally, I recently read a disturbing report that the lady concerned has wriitten a book which is due for publication soon. If this is true, it would seem to put an entirely different complexion on matters. Best to wait for the result of the police investigation before making judgements I think..........

stephen
Dave can you remember what you did in 1974

Adj Jackson
Loads from high up the ladder to masons police chief executives pop stars plenty more if investigations dont hit that strange brick wall

Dave Harrison
Evening Gordon. Didn't know about the book and it does put a different slant on things. It is also fair to say he can't be expected to remember events over 36 years ago. What does bug me though is how all & sundry have gone after JS with a passion and yet little seems to have been done about the dozens of others who must have committed similar acts. Lets face it Gary Glitter got caught in Thailand but it would be extremely niave to think he wasn't doing exactly the same thing when at the peak of his fame in the UK

Dave Harrison
Stephen. I can. I was basking in the glory of my team winning the FA Cup in 1973 and I was there. That said I can hardlly remember what I did yesterday these days. Anno Domini my friend, comes to us all.

Dave Harrison
Adj. Are yes that strange brick wall that kept the relatives of the 96 at bay for so many years. I still think that there could be a lot more to come out of this yet but money, fame and influence are powerful weapons in the hands of the guilty

Gordon Wright
Dave, Thanks for your reply. Just for information, the lady concerned has actually written two books. She writes under the name Kat Ward and the books are entitled "Keri" and "Keri 2 - Fighting back". Both can be obtained from Amazon for the sum of £23.55. Agree with your comments regarding others who might still be a "at large".

Juliecrumpton1234
Of COURSE he remembered,...

Dave Harrison
Julie. Judging by the latest story to hit the streets with Max Clifford being involved lit ooks like quite a few of these stars have remembered and are starting the damage limitation exercise

shaun spencer
Im sorry if im stating the obviuos or have i got this wrong.i thought rape was unconsented sexial intercourse not wandering hands.

Londliveengland 66
That's what I thought as well, can anyone enlighten us please?

Kerry Carline
In response to your earlier question,no i do not take my view from what i read in the sun.i dnt read them,i go on personal experiance of sexual abuse from several men.no1 knows what goes through a young persons mind when faced with a situation like this unless u go through it.fear, shock and in many cases u dnt think about what ur doing because theres an adult infront of u and u do what they say especially when they threaten u.he was a powerful man.we have an age of consent for a reason which in dy opinion should be changed to 18.u dnt know ur own mind at 14 or even 16 and it can easily be manipulated at that age.the comments that have been left on here by some people have disgusted and infuriated me.unbelivably ignorant.

Juliecrumpton1234
Right behind you, Kerry!....Shaun, oh Shaun, so NOW your saying its ok for men to wander hands all over the place! You are fast losing credibility now....!

Kerry Carline
Thanks julie.this man is unbelivable.but it seems that most of the ignorant garb is coming from men.he keeps making stupid comments that have no foundation.some people should keep their mouthes shut

Diane Rogers
Why is Shaun unbelievable. I totally agree with him

blue side
Kerry et al I am sorry but you are a little naive the comments made have nothing to do with gender as you seem to imply. Neither is there ignorance as there is evidence under the head of behavioral science. I think if you ventured out you might be very surprised at what does go on. Shaun is expressing an opinion based on his experiences of life and I have to say that in the pop music industry some of the goings on would fill volumes negate much of your argument.

Kerry Carline
Blue side.believe me i an not naieve and im very aware of what goes on thank you.too many people are missing the point.there should not be a debate.would you do what he did???? No??? And why????

Juliecrumpton1234
Kerry....hang in there, love your fighting like a good,un! Some people, then think a very short skirt, and low cut top is a licence for a free for all then? Seems like men, poor things, just cannot be expected to control themselves,....and this is coming from men! Lol!

shaun spencer
Id like to ask peaple here, and i know your having to guess but out of the 300 lines of enquiry how many do you think the cps would follow up and take to court.in other words out of a 100% how many do you think are telling the truth.

Kerry Carline
It doesnt matter how many.the fact of the matter is that if just 1 person is telling the truth it should sureley tell u all u need to know.he was a child abuser.stop analyzing it because it's coming across like ur defending him and blaming the victims.the law states the age of consent 16 not 14.

blue side
Kerry read what Shaun has said he is not defending JS or anyone else but questioning the extent of the claims and what constitutes wrongdoing.

Kerry Carline
And who is he to question any1.leave that to the police.they will decide who is being truthfull and who isnt.maybe u should read his comments and look at it frm another angle.wrong doing?????? The facts speak for them selves.he abused kids.period.

Diane Rogers
Blue side, well said think some of the folks on here should go to pubs and clubs on a Friday and Saturday night and see how some of the girls dress and behave and try and guess their age

shaun spencer
Thats obvious kerry .

shaun spencer
Kerry im sorry you really are missing my point.and badly at that.what do you think my questions are about.have you read my questions properly.any child thats abused is clearly very wrong.but what as the public should we do about it.change the law?im asking a question not condoning js.what is a comments page about if not to provoke thought and hopefully to come to a solution.

Kerry Carline
If ur an adult and ur having to question some young persons age then you shouldnt be anywhere near them.and how a girl dress doesnt give a man the right to abuse them, did u see how the young girls dressed on js show.did they ask for it too????? disgusting attitude

Kerry Carline
Ur a small frog in a very big pond shaun.im responding to ur replies made to other people now and earlier today.ur questions are rediculous and from what i can see there are only a few and common sense answers them.

shaun spencer
Of course im analyzing it.isnt everyone And what are you saying now i shouldnt be near kids.cos i dont think my children would like that

shaun spencer
Kerry why havent you answerd my questions .have you.well heres another one in respose to your skirt comment.why do you think girls wear short skirts in the winter.and dont call me a male chaffinst pig.to keep them warm.

Diane Rogers
Kerry read and analyse my point which is men can't.guess how old a girl is because some dress older and yes they should be able ro dress hoq they like but it makes it difficult for men

Kerry Carline
Shaun dnt twist things.and that was in reply to some1 else actually.it's a differant thing entireley and i would hope ud know the age of ur kids.

blue side
Re post. Diane think we need to take Kerry out to a city club on a Friday or Saturday or maybe back stage at a rock concert to extend her education then ask her whether Shaun might have a point.

Adj Jackson
Diane in my pub they dress like 20 odd yr olds skirt up there bums blouses down to their waists as for the ages would say most are 50 but 1 or 2 60+

shaun spencer
And why does orange show a picture of freddie starr with a little girl.

Gordon Wright
Good Point.................

fish41
probably high jacked him walking home with a grandchild. That said perhaps freddie shouldnt be talking about child abuse in front of her. Or is he trying to send out a message?

blue side
Diane think we need to take Kerry out on a Saturday night to a city club or back stage at a rock band gig then ask her again to say its them beastly men

Andy Savo Hanson
I'm sorry but only the persons there would remember what happened that night don't matter if it was 5 years ago or 50 you would always remember if someone touched you but in them days no one would believe you.

shaun spencer
Yes exactly.they dont believe you.

Kerry Carline
And a lot of people still wouldnt.mentioning no names ss

david maxwell
im not saying hes innocent or guilty.... but how many people can honestly say they remember everything they did and evetyone the met nearly 40 yrs ago....in the seventies if freddie's honest he was probably pissed or stoned most of the time... the guy probably made hundreds of appearence that month...lets wait see if any more claoms come out

Comedians , pop groups, groupies, cults, what other groups can we know abouts, Doesn't mean these poor soles shouldn't get justice and help. These days its not only children that electronically dont like direct communication, why's that taught, best we send an faceless email thank goodness the police dept are investigating this now 5 days a weeks hope child protection dept do the same week, somebodies got to get to the bottom of these crimes.

Para999Tom
the difference is that J.S is dead. there will be more claims about other live celebrities in the coming months, mark my words.there's a smell of compensation in the air and there are people about that will make claims about things that supposidly happened over 40 years ago in the hope they can strike it lucky.the whole business is turning into a media frenzy over who will be the next big celebrity named.one thing that does surprise me is why F.S has made this statement, through his solicitor, before there was any chance of the police wanting him for questioning ( which they don't if you believe this article). very odd

maxine sweetman-ive
Why do we have to keep seeing jimmy so evil's face on tv or in the papers whenever this matter is spoken about. We all know what he looks like now. If seeing his face makes me cringe with disgust, anger and embarassment then it makes you think how his victims feel!

The rule of thunb should be,"Keep your hands to yourself." And, "Don't touch other people's goods." And," Leave things where you find them." People love to touch things, but you have to refrain from doing that.Putting hands in pockets helps,or walk away.Mr Saville wasn't taught these rules when he was a child.

Geoff
I think the line "Mr Starr appeared with Savile on an episode of the BBC television show Clunk Click" seems to imply that paedophilia is somehow contagious, and therefore anyone who may have come into close physical contact with Savile is likely to have become infected. I'm not saying Starr is innocent, merely the danger of presuming someone is guilty just because he was once in the same room as a known paedophile.
