Seal Abuse Causes Beach Shutdown: CCTV

San Diego's mayor has ordered a two-month overnight shutdown of a beach after cameras caught people apparently abusing a colony of seals.

The CCTV system was set up to allow the public to monitor mothers and their pups.

However at least two women were filmed kicking, punching and sitting on top of the animals.

Now the southern California city's mayor has ruled the La Jolla beach, known as Children's Pool, will be closed between sunset and sunrise until May 15.

The 24-hour "seal-cam" was introduced in January and equipped with night vision so researchers could watch the seals give birth during the pupping season.

Wildlife campaigner Andrea Hahn told the KFMB news station that the seal abuse has been a problem for years.

"We've had reports of poaching. We've had shootings here at night. We've had seal mutilations at night," she said.

The beach has been the centre of a long legal fight over human access versus seal protection.

It is not illegal to venture near the roped off shoreline, but harassing the seals is against the law.

This is disgusting behaviour. When will people realise they have no right to do this to animals? Hope they get caught.

Blood poisoning would be an extreme outcome. But a really bad infection that requires lots of antibiotic treatment is more than likely. But you wouldnt want to risk it and hope ot clears up on its owm. All marine mammals can potentially carry some nasty bugs that can be transmited to us through bites. A lot of the beaches in new zealand have signs warning people not to go too close to fur seals and sea lions for this reason. And also because they dont like. people going near I managed to take a cracking photo of one showing off its winning smile when i got too close. Luckily there was a rock pool between us and i was higher up

I didn't notice you said something similar. I should have checked your reply section before I commented. I haven't had my computer online for weeks. I'm not used to it.

I only saw two girls pretending to do Oriental martial arts on the seals and it isn't very easy to tell if they are really hitting and kicking the seals or pretending to. They seem very bothered by being sat on and I think it could be well be dangerous if seals attack people. I've never heard of seals attacking anyone but I don't doubt they are capable of defending themselves, considering the oceans they live in. I think, such girls should obviously be saved from their own seal-kicking stupidity, along with anyone else who does that.

This was a staged performance designed for the SealCam in an effort to get the beach closed and solicit more money from gullible donors who value emotion and sentimentality over science. The Wans of Malibu and their pseudo-scientific and eponymous "conservancy" are only in this for the profits. Altruism is the farthest thing from their minds. They paid for the installation of the camera with the intent of using staged video to stir up donations from easy marks. They should be audited by the IRS and by the State Attorney General for fraudulent use of a non-profit organization. State law prohibits closing public beach access. Even wealthy beachfront property owners in Malibu have to live with this reality. Mayor Filner is pandering to the lowest common intellectual denominator by his illegal action.
