Seven Terror Suspects Quizzed After Gun Find

Police are continuing to question seven men held on suspicion of terror offences after firearms and other weapons were found "hidden" in a car.

They are being held on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

A force spokesman said the arrests "followed a routine stop of a vehicle by police on the M1 motorway in South Yorkshire on June 30".

The car was impounded on suspicion of having no insurance but the driver and passenger were not detained by South Yorkshire Police.

The spokesman said: "Firearms, offensive weapons and other material were later found hidden inside, prompting police to take action to trace and arrest the driver, passenger and others suspected of being involved."

Police said three men aged 23, 26 and 27 from Sparkhill, Birmingham, were arrested on Tuesday morning.

Three more suspects, a 22-year-old from Alum Rock, Birmingham, a 24-year-old from the Moseley area of the city, and a 22-year-old from Smethwick, West Midlands, were arrested on Wednesday evening.

A 43-year old man from Kirklees, West Yorkshire, was detained on Thursday.

Sky's crime correspondent Martin Brunt said the car was not searched until three days after it was seized. It was only then that police were alerted to what was inside and began to trace the men they had let go.

Brunt said the arrests were not Olympics-related but were believed to be part of a "major plot".

Detective Chief Superintendent Kenny Bell, head of the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit, said: "As soon as the items were discovered in the impounded vehicle, our priority was to protect the public by pursuing and arresting those we believed to be involved."

Police said the contents of the car were being examined by forensics teams and the suspects' homes had been searched.

Detectives have been given extra time to question the three men arrested on Tuesday and now have until next Tuesday morning to charge or release the men, or apply for a further warrant.

I have tried that test online and got to say what a load of Browllocks the questions are. I fail to see the relevance of wanting to be British and knowing when woman were first allowed to divorce their husbands (for example). Which T, IT dreamt these questions up? Hardly anyone would know the answer apart from a divorce lawyer perhaps. The other questions are just as rubbish

I am so glad that I no longer live in london or work at Heathrow. We don't get terrorist bombs in the village I live in. I will be watching the TV over the olympics though. Somewhere in London will go bang it such a great target. Houses or parliament, Trafalgar Square, Buck House, Exhabition Row. So many targets and so few plods!

They've got to be on the gangster list with those guns they found. You can't convert replica guns .The metal is too soft for 20 tons of pressure inside the barrel when the bullet explodes.

If they are terrorists, they must be very stupid terrorists. Driving around in an uninsured car is asking for trouble since almost every patrol car is fitted with ANPR these days. Given the current Police policy concerning uninsured vehicles, they were almost certain to be pulled over.................

Michael, I am not suggesting for a moment that they cared about paying for their vehicle insurance, I don't suppose it concerned them in the slightest. However, surely if you are about to commit a criminal or terrorist act, you try not, repeat not, to draw attention to yourself, which is just what these idiots did......

I have never had accesss to a UK journalistic style book o am frequently confused about the use of quotation marks, especially in headlines. For example, in this story "hidden" is in quotes. Were the weapons hidden or were they not? Had "hidden" been deleted from the story, would "found" been in quotes? And some papers would refuse even to allow reader comments because the "alleged" "people" may or may not at some point in time be in court, so "reader comments are not available for this story." WTF not? Paranoia?

What on earth is wrong with these people. They live a good life in Britain yet choose to revert to these type of practises.
