Sir Patrick Stewart carries Olympic torch through Croydon
Sir Patrick Stewart has spoken of his pride after becoming the latest celebrity to carry the Olympic torch, insisting he will "never forget" the momentous occasion.
The Star Trek legend carried the beacon through the streets of south London on Monday ahead of the launch of the London 2012 Games on Friday.
He was cheered on by locals in Croydon, and the actor insists the excitement from the crowd was electric.
Stewart says, "I have attended world premieres of big movies that have not had the excitement and the sense of pleasure and pride that people are exhibiting today
"The great thing is it's the first day of the school (summer) holidays and so all the children are out. It was thrilling, I shall never forget today."
The torch, which has also been carried by stars including Muse, James McAvoy and Melanie Chisholm on its journey around the country, was later featured in a special live segment of EastEnders. Actor Perry Fenwick had the honour of running with the torch during Monday night's episode of the show.
