Snow: No One In UK Safe As Big Chill Sets In
Icy winds from Russia are set to whip up a fortnight of wintry weather across the UK, with forecasters warning of snow in most parts of the country.
The unseasonably mild start to the year is expected to give way to temperatures as low as minus 5C, caused by an area of high pressure developing over Scandinavia.
Cold air moving in from the Baltic and western Russia will clash with milder air and Atlantic weather systems arriving from the west, with the UK directly underneath.
Paul Gundersen, chief forecaster at the Met Office, said: "All parts of the UK will see cold weather setting in over the weekend.
"We can expect sleet and snow showers to affect eastern areas at times, but with a battle developing between the cold air in the east and mild air pushing in from the west, no one should be surprised to see sleet or snow over the weekend and next week."
Sky News weather forecaster Isobel Lang it was "too early to give details on how much snow will fall and where.
"This is complicated by the fact that we are in the zone between cold air to the east and milder air to the west and at times one will become more dominant than the other."
A dusting of hill snow is expected in the north before snow showers reach southern and eastern areas this weekend.
The Met Office said the wintry weather could last until around January 23 when the outlook is more uncertain.
Ms Lang said: "As wet weather spreads east across England and Wales on Saturday, some snow is likely, especially over hills but perhaps down to low levels later as the front clears southeastern areas.
"A chill east wind will feed in further snow showers to eastern Britain during Sunday, although western parts should be dry and bright.
"A covering of snow is likely over higher ground but some may settle at low levels too. Temperatures on Sunday may only reach around 2C to 4C at best."
what do you think?

SHOCK HORROR, COLD WEATHER IN WINTER!!!!!!!

Bazil Brush
what.about tolkien he feels left out

TIM x
Here we go again. One flake on Heathrow and you can forget your winter breaks in the sun.

Steven Tracey
I think an intern wrote this after watching The Day After Tomorrow on E4 last night. Nowhere is safe - from a light dusting of snow?

robert
Get ready for a total shutdown.Cam telling councils to save money by not gritting roads, clegg nodding like a glove puppet in agreement, and if it does manage to snow JO JAMES can have my share. LOL.

Lorgar Aurelian
Pretty sure i'll be safe from a couple cm of snow. I'm not worried. Far better than rain anyway.

Louisa Gieldon
I love the snow. It makes me feel ten again and if it does snow then me and my crutches will be going out for a (quite careful) walk

Lorgar Aurelian
Snow is brilliant! If you wear proper clothing and boots and drive accordingly there's no problems! People don't and that's where they come a cropper.

Louisa Gieldon
I agree Lorgar. We don't treat it with respect. That's when accidents happen

jane cumming
Well plenty of non bland weather here in williamson country.just the usual extreme weather.plenty of water.no wonder williamson moved to shakespear country.

shaun spencer
Ah miss cumming.youve nicked my comment everytime stevie makes his bland weather comment.lol

jane cumming
To that i must confess.

shaun spencer
Yes there must be some copyright laws being broken here.might have to sue.lol

jane cumming
Hows the flooding down there now.

shaun spencer
Were okay thanks jane, though fields are still flooded so farmer isnt doing well.theres lots of wrangling going on between us flooded ones, the builder, the enviromental agency, and council.seems two houses built recently might have to be knocked down as they built them on a stream.were currently thinking of moving its been relentless this year though might be post xmas blues.the feeling most peaple have is that after the news broadcasts and publicity they have now been forgotten particuarly in braughton.

Diane - so do I . . .! Meon Hill looks even more mystical than usual under snowfall

Diane Rogers
You wouldn't be saying that if you were old and can't safely get about.Or like me have fallen in the snow and got hurt

Louisa Gieldon
Hope you get loads of snow Stevie, but because you'll lke it. I love the snow so much and hope we get loads. It makes the landscape so beautiful - as you say, mystical and peaceful. Bring it on!

Jasmin Louise
It's not mystical and peaceful when you're working and people don't take any bleeding notice of road conditions! Sorry! It's a nightmare for emergency services :( X

Valerie Wood
Yes its the same in the NHS. Snow and ice means many more patients!!!!

Diane Rogers
Jasmine and Valerie, well said girls,it may be pretty and mystical but dangerous to some. As I said I fell a few years ago luckily I did not need hospital treatment but bruised my lower back. Was in pain for weeks.

Louisa Gieldon
I know it's a bit selfish and i've fallen myself. I know that hospitals get busy and the accidents increase. I wouldn't wish harm on anyone but in my own selfish way I do love it and wish that people would treat it with respect and slow down. use snow tyres and caution, etc

Diane Rogers
I do actually like the snow would prefer if it was on days I don't have to go to work. After my fall I wear my walking boots and walk very gingerly

Valerie Wood
I just cannot walk on snow or ice I look like Bambi - legs all over the place and I usually end up in a very undignified heap on the floor :(

Baker101
So, since it's been warned...the country should be plenty prepared for what is to come when it hits. Oh yeah, I forgot this is England.

Louisa Gieldon
It's also Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland! Baker i'm no rampant nationalist but try to remember that you are part of the UK. Remember us poor old celts now and then?

Matt Stoner
Louisa, I think Baker was taking the mickey out the fact when everyone else in Britain manages to carry on in even the worst snow, England comes to a halt at the first snowflake.....

Louisa Gieldon
Matt. was i being daft again? I do agree actually, as our snow never seems to get much notice on the news, but the snow in the south is always major and takes top billing. I think there is an assumption that we get loads od it but we don't, apart from the Highlands and we fall apart just like every other area does.

Matt Stoner
I wouldn't say daft, sarcasm and/or humour can be hard to put across in type. I just have a dry sense of humour, so I got it...(o: I live in the Highlands, this Winter has been proper wierd, we've had a yo-yo with the temperature. Last couple of weeks it's been mild. I remember when at this time of year it would be below zero and we would have inches of snow right the way through til spring.......

Jasmin Louise
More profit for the energy (fiddling))providers....

Alf Bibby
We have been warned whats the odds that Britian will be gridlocked on the first fall of snow

Mark Hussey
Probley means it will rain

Mike Anon
Snow in January in the UK, who would have guessed?

Lorgar Aurelian
If it's anything like the drought we were told we were suffering last year, temp will probably be in the 40s...

shaun spencer
I always love helping the kids make a snowman, or should i say the kids help me build a snowman.last time we had a mr and mrs snowman( no jokes about snow balls please).apparently this year weve got to make a snowdog.

Louisa Gieldon
Make it look like the one on the "snowman and the snowdog" shown at Christmas! He was cute, with a glove on his side for a patch!

shaun spencer
Thats where the kids have got it from louisa.the snowman and the snowdog.

Chris King
Anything other than rain is good for me personally. England makes the rainforests look dry at times I swear.

Paul Walsh
Blimey, fancy that! Well I never, snow in Britain in the winter! What next! Rain in summer?

JessRowley86
How can they predict the weather for two weeks time ? They said this before xmas and it was totally wrong. I know how to see what the weather is going to be like and that's to look outside! Tonight its raining in my area and cold with a hint of blustery wind coming from the left. And tommorow il look outside again for tommorows forecast :-)

Sara Broughton
@Tim ooh I don't know, did his old mate William go there? Lol

We'll see no snow here in Shakespeare country, just the usual mild and bland. No snowmen or snowball fights for us. No wonder william moved to London

Every time we are forecast adverse weather you say the exact same thing, "No snow/floods/storms here in Shakespeare county just mild and bland". It's getting so repetitive and boring that I've finally had to log in and say something. I live in the same area and one of the very few good things it has going for it is that we usually escape the worst of the bad weather. If you want dramatic weather, as you seemingly do, move! Gosh that feels better.
