Starring Role For China's Giant Pandas

Giant panda cubs at a research centre in the southwest China city of Chengdu have been the star attraction during the Spring Festival holiday.

The baby pandas at the Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base have been attracting crowds of visitors since January 30.

People have been taking pictures of the cuddly creatures either huddled together in their nursery or, when they venture outside, climbing up and down trees.

One of the most appealing sights, visitors say, is the cubs taking rides on a rocking horse.

The panda sanctuary opened in 1987 with six endangered pandas.

The nearly 500-acre reserve has since bred around 124 giant pandas.
