Stars back MTV telethon
Taylor Swift, Britney Spears and Alicia Keys were among the stars who offered special video messages to show their support to the victims of Hurricane Sandy during an MTV telethon on Thursday night.
The stars joined Pink and Christina Aguilera, Bruno Mars, Simon Cowell, One Direction and Demi Lovato in urging fans to donate cash as part of the hour-long Restore the Shore benefit.
Swift served up the most touching message as she recalled holidaying at Jersey Shore, which was washed away by last month's superstorm.
She said, "As a kid, I spent my summers at the Shore and I have so many amazing memories from that time in my life, so I'm sending all my love and support to all the people in New Jersey who suffered through Hurricane Sandy."
As part of the MTV telethon, the cast of Jersey Shore returned to their TV home to check out the devastation in the wake of Sandy and talk to locals and a tearful mayor, Bill Ackers.
Castmate Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi, who also helped man the phones for the live telethon, took a helicopter ride over the shore and burst into tears when she saw the aftermath of the storm.
The new mum sobbed, "This really sucks, the whole pier is just gone... I want to bring (son) Lorenzo when he's old enough to bring him on the rides (sic) and to show him how much Seaside (Heights) means to me and it's not here anymore... It just breaks my heart to see everything look like this."
On the live show, Snooki admitted the helicopter trip was "mindblowing" and "very upsetting", adding, "It's like a ghost town".
As part of the telethon, the Jersey Shore castmates joined stars from reality TV show The Real Housewives of New Jersey and drama Teen Wolf on the phones to chat to viewers making donations.
Gym Class Heroes and American Idol winner Phillip Phillips offered up musical numbers during the TV fundraiser.
