Teen Charged After University Student Shot Dead
A 19-year-old has been charged with the murder of a student shot outside a dormitory at South Carolina State University.
Justin Bernard Singleton, from Charleston, was arrested following the death of 20-year-old Brandon Robinson at the university's Hugine Suites.
Campus police who were called to the scene found Mr Robinson injured but he died later in hospital.
Fighting back tears, university president Thomas Elzey vowed to keep the rest of his students safe.
"He was a very nice young man," Mr Elzey said. "And it hurts. It hurts us all.
"Our deepest condolences go to the family of the victim. As police work to apprehend the people they believe are responsible for this horrible crime, we're pulling together as a community."
A spokesperson for the university said police were looking for four suspects who left the scene of the shooting.
Campus Police Chief Mernard Clarkson said police had been unable to discover what led to the shooting but added that the campus was secure again and students safe.
The university lies 40 miles south of Columbia and has some 5,000 enrolled students.
The incident is the third shooting to take place at a US college campus this week.
On Monday a student was shot and injured at Widener University, Pennsylvania, and the next day a student was shot and killed by a gunman at Purdue University in Indiana.
