Suspicious Package Sparks Navy False Alarm

A suspicious package sent to a Royal Navy base near Portsmouth sparked a false alarm.

A bomb disposal unit arrived at the base in Fareham to deal with what Sky News sources described as a suspicious package.

The incident was later declared a false alarm.

This follows an emergency meeting of the government's Cobra committee on Thursday after a string of crude but potentially explosive devices were mailed to seven armed forces recruitment offices in the south-east of England.

The devices were said by the government to have "the hallmarks of Northern Ireland-related terrorism".

HMS Collingwood is the Royal Navy's largest training establishment.

It delivers training in weapon engineering, diving, nuclear damage control, sea survival, seamanship and military skills.
