Syrian Rebels 'Kill Pro-Regime Militia'
Graphic new footage has emerged that it is claimed shows rebel soldiers in Syria lining up and shooting dead pro-government militia members.
The two-minute video seems to show members of the Shabiha, a militia group aligned to President Bashar al Assad's regime, being killed. They appear to be unarmed.
Sky News is unable to verify the images independently.
The person who posted the video online says it shows rebel soldiers leading members of the militia down a street in Aleppo, Syria's largest city and the scene of intense fighting between government forces and the opposition.
Meanwhile, President Assad has said the Syrian army's battle with rebel forces would determine the fate of his country.
He also praised "heroic" soldiers for confronting what he said were "criminal terrorist gangs".
"The fate of our people and our nation, past, present and future, depends on this battle," Mr Assad, who has not spoken in public for two weeks, said in a written statement marking armed forces day.
In the new video footage, some of the captives appear to have been beaten or are wounded. The men are forced to sit down by a wall as a crowd gathers. Many of the men are armed.
Another member of the crowd appears to try to prevent it being filmed.
After a minute of continuous shooting, the dead bodies of the men who had been lined up against the wall can clearly be seen.
Sky correspondent Alex Rossi, reporting from the Syria-Turkey border, said the Shabiha are "feared and reviled in equal measure".
"They are blamed for things like the Houla massacre on May 25 in which 108 people were killed, 49 of them children.
"It would be understandable why, in the heat of war, they may be killed in this way. Certainly the Geneva convention doesn't hold much sway in this conflict.
"I suppose this just illustrates just how tense this is and the levels of violence that are being perpetrated on both sides, if of course this video does turn out to be what it is claimed to be."
Government forces have been trying to seize back large areas of Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub, which have been under the control of the Free Syrian Army for several days.
Combat aircraft and artillery pounded the city late into Tuesday night after the rebels claimed troops loyal to the regime had been forced to retreat.
The rebels have said they now control an arc that covers eastern and south western districts, including Salaheddine which the regime said it had recaptured on Monday.
"The regime has tried for three days to regain Saleheddine, but its attempts have failed and it has suffered heavy losses in human life, weapons and tanks, and it has been forced to withdraw," Colonel Abdel Jabbar al Oqaidi, head of the Joint Military Council, one of several rebel groups in Aleppo, told Reuters.
Oqaidi said more than 3,000 rebel fighters were in Aleppo but would not give a precise number.
what do you think?
See the rebels are nothing but terriosts assad is right on what he is doing
Assad(and the Baath Party) would kill as many thousands as it takes to stay in power. His father thought nothing of killing 30,000 in one go. (Homs) To them people of the wrong sect are merely disposable. He will eventually be killed, like Gaddafi, but it could take years to settle down. And how many other countries have these tyrant 'lifetime' leaders?
Just try and kick Liz off of her throne and see what happens Chris.
In these are the men we want to run the country???? Better the devil you know i say.
I dont think we have(or want) any say in who runs Syria. It will be the Syrians who will eventually decide. The years of 'SuperPower' standoff allowed bast ard tyrants to flourish in the region. A good few million intelligent people, there, are fed up of it. They have guns and they see it succeed.
Fair enough Chris, so this is the way you see justice done? We are supporting a rebel group we know very little about with possible Islamic extremist elements. Is that a good idea?
The Assad's(and the Baathists) came into power by killing. It has always been the way. Surley we would not send in jets to keep Assad in power? that would be crazy! We will always support the majority, if there is a clear majority. It's all totally crazy really, we have been fighting on behalf of millions of oppressed Islamic peoples all over the world yet some want to destroy us! Trouble is the factions hate eachother almost as much as us.
Well done Cameron & Hague - supporting a bunch of Islamic jihadists.
How long before your terrorists attack Britain Prime Minister David Camoron, using religion to divide the Arabs . DISGRACEFUL.
I think all the people who have bothered learning how to read and write, owe it to humanity to use whatever they have learned to try and prevent anything like this happening. Otherwise, the human "civilisation" which our ancestors spent thousands, if not, millions of years sacrificing themselves for, is going to end up being run by a bunch of illiterate, post apocolyptic, Neanderthals. Whatever happened to "triumph of the nerds"? Are they all hiding from the ensuing chaos?
This exemplifies what has been happening for the last 18 month in Syria. These armed savages mostl from outside the country doing this to innocent civilians when they refuse to give then their homes and women and children or if they refuse to g on the streets and protest against the Goverment. Then they film them executed either blaming the Goverment or calling them Shabiha .. a term they created to label any citizen not in Uniform. The Houla Massacre was a classicle example!proven many times over to be at the hands of savages, NOT Humans. Qatar and Saudi Arabia has led the West and Nato into supporting these crimes for the Petro Dollar. Shame on you all for allowing this to happen . What is imploding in the Country will soon explode and go after the very countries that supported them! Like a cancer , no one is Immune . Shame! Shame! Shame!
Where was the support for the U.K during the Falklands, Iraq, Iraq again and on and on ! Their political issue and fight, leave em to it.
I totaly agree with you ...
With Cameron and Hague interfereing and backing the radicals, they have put British lives in danger as never before. How long will it be before London becomes Aleppo?
Any one can make a film. Believe nothing you read and only half of what you see. You have to be part of it to know what's going on. Hilter made some good films showing us as baby killers to inspire his loyal soldiers.
Cameron's chum Hague is very fond of these jihadists, why? He spouted lies about Libya and the media didn't question him, he would have given these Syrian "rebels" an airforce but for the Chinese and Russians blocking his plans. What is it with the Conservative party? I remember watching a Conservative party conference on TV some years ago, they were cheering two members of the Taliban on stage ( they called them the "holy warriors" then), just whose side are our politicians on?
well they're not on the side of the British public, thats for sure
Whose side John - Why whoever pays them the most that's who!
"criminal terorist gangs" funded by criminal Western 'democracies'. Remember Cameron - what goes round comes round - the jihadists you are helping want to see the end of Christianity and the coming of a totally Islamic world. Those who aid my enemy becomes MY enemy!
When is all this going to end ? and where ! i cant imagine .... but please , please DONT send our troops in , not any more they have done enough already these country's and the people must start to take care of then selves now -- not us ! all i want is to see is our 'Boys' come home from wherever they are ....please God !!!
