Teddy Sheringham: 'I didn't mean to injure Gordon Ramsay'

Former England football star Teddy Sheringham is adamant he did not intend to injure celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay during a charity match on Sunday, insisting he mistimed his challenge.

Hell's Kitchen star Ramsay was given oxygen on the pitch and was taken to hospital with an agonising back injury after Sheringham clattered him from behind during the star-studded Soccer Aid event in Manchester.

Sheringham's full-blooded tackle attracted a swathe of abusive messages on Twitter.com, and the ex-sportsman took to his own page on the microblogging website on Monday to explain the incident.

He writes, "Never set out to hurt rammer (Ramsay) but football is (a) contact sport these things happen. Just got my timing wrong! Am in my mid 40s you know!"

The biennial event, in which international celebrities including Will Ferrell, Mike Myers and Edward Norton took on a team of British stars in a challenge match, raised more than £4 million for UNICEF.

what do you think?

Some of those playing are getting on a bit for this game and can get injured easily, Gordon already had a very heavily bandaged knee and I thought it may have been that he had hurt in this tackle, it was a bad tackle but I do believe it was not done on purpose, they all knew the risks and still chose to play.

terry sherringham has no excuse for that tackle it was what it was a blatent jump into gordon ramseys back with no intention of getting the ball excuses dont wash with me so he is 40+ he was a professional footballer so he should know what he did was wrong i really wanted england to lose after that because it seemed to knock the life and fun out of the game for rest of the world and was no longer enjoyable

Teddy.......you lying toad, from every camera angle your knee up challenge was never about the ball. You knew you would never get a headline for your play on the day, so that was your way of getting coverage you would have never got any other way. I had respect for you as a player in your prime but that was unforgiveable. Isn't it strange how he never mistimed any tackles on the younger fitter professionals?
