The Dark Knight Rises to the top of box office

The Dark Knight Rises has triumphed at cinemas on both sides of the Atlantic - it rocketed to the top of the UK box office chart on the first weekend of its release.

The Batman trilogy's closing film debuted at Number One after making £14.6 million in ticket sales, leaving its nearest rival - Ice Age: Continental Drift - in the shade with just £2.1 million.

Fellow superhero movie The Amazing Spider-Man dropped from second to third place, with takings of £1 million, and the top five is rounded out by stripper comedy Magic Mike (£885,330) and romantic comedy The Five-Year Engagement (£77,160).

The Dark Knight Rises, starring Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader, raked in an estimated £100 million on its opening weekend in the US.
