The Vines singer Craig Nicholls arrested

Australian singer Craig Nicholls was arrested at his house in Sydney at the weekend over allegations he assaulted his mother.

The Vines frontman, 35, reportedly punched his mum in the head and tried to evade arrest after police were called to his home in the south-east of the city on Saturday, according to local publication The St George & Sutherland Shire Leader.

Officers are said to have used pepper spray to subdue him.

Police Inspector Robert Duncan says, "He tried to evade police and (a) violent struggle ensued. A police officer suffered grazes, cuts and bruises to both elbows and knees."

Nicholls, who suffers from Asperger's Syndrome, is set to appear in court later this week, charged with two counts of domestic assault, stalking or intimidation, resisting arrest and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
