Tom Cruise Has Top Gun 2 In His Sights

Tom Cruise has told Sky News he has Top Gun 2 firmly in his sights - as he picked up a special lifetime film award.

The veteran actor said he was working to "get over some stumbling blocks" and was still in discussions with film-makers.

The actor spoke to Sky's Richard Suchet on the red carpet at the Empire film awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

He was later honoured with Empire'sLegend of Our Lifetime award, while Arnold Schwarzenegger was given the Action Hero of Our Lifetime award.

Cruise said he was currently working on the next film in the Mission: Impossible series, but a Top Gun sequel was on the horizon.

"With movies, they each have their time - when it's ready to be made. If we can get over some stumbling blocks it will be fun to do," he added.

Top Gun opened in the USon May 16, 1986. It quickly became a success and was the highest grossing film of the year.

It went on to take an estimated worldwide box office total of212m ($354m).

In his acceptance speech, Schwarzenegger admitted being stubborn was behind his success.

"My advice is never take no for an answer," he said. "I was told I'd never get into bodybuilding. I was told I'd never make it in the movie business. They said I was too big, they said it wouldn't work with my accent. I never listened to them, and I went on to have a successful career.

"So never take no for an answer. So thank you, and I'll be back," he added, using his trademark line from The Terminator.

Hugh Jackman was given the Icon award by Oscar-winning director Darren Aronofsky.

"Getting an award that has the word 'icon' on it in a room with Tom Cruise, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Emma Thompson is ridiculous. But thank you," he said.
