Criminal Complaint Over Topless Kate Photos

Lawyers for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will lodge a criminal complaint with the French prosecutor on Monday over topless pictures taken of the Duchess.

St James's Palace says the photographer breached the couple's privacy - as did the French edition of Closer magazine that printed the images.

A spokesman said: "We can confirm that a criminal complaint is to be made to the French Prosecution Department tomorrow.

"The complaint concerns the taking of photographs of the The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge whilst on holiday and the publication of those photographs in breach of their privacy."

More publications plan to print the photographs, but officials say the couple remain focused on their Diamond Jubilee tour, which landed in the Solomon Islands on Sunday.

On what is the penultimate stage of the tour, William and Kate were welcomed to the Queen's Pacific Realm by Island warriors in a traditional ceremony.

They were paraded through the streets of Honiara in an open-top vehicle shaped like a canoe, and attended a Sunday morning service at St Barnabas Cathedral.

As the group of islands has no military, the couple instead inspected an Honour Guard made up of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force.

It is the first country visited by the couple during their tour where the Queen is head of state.

Back home, a St James' Palace spokesman described a decision by the Irish Daily Star to publish the topless photographs as motivated "by greed".

The royals' condemnation came as the future of the Irish newspaper became uncertain after its co-owner, Northern and Shell, which prints the Star and Express titles in the UK, said it would end its joint venture with the Dublin tabloid in protest at the publication.

Media tycoon Richard Desmond, who used to own a series of adult entertainment titles and is now the chairman of Northern and Shell, said he was "very angry" at the decision to publish the photos, for which he saw "no justification whatever".

The Irish Daily Star editor Michael O'Kane defended their publication, saying the Duchess was no different from Rihanna or Lady Gaga, and acknowledging he wanted to sell more newspapers.

Italy's Chi magazine has also said it intends to publish up to 23 photographs of the Duchess of Cambridge in Monday's edition - the editor has tweeted that "not even a call from the Queen" would stop him publishing the images.

No....but she is in a very privileged position, and should act accordingly, she cannot afford any, for want of a better word, scandal, always be on guard, realising that this sort of thing can...and did happen, suprised this wasn't pointed out to her....

don't see what the big issue is, at the end of the day they know they get followed by the press and if she decides to get her t*** out knowing full well that someone would be watching then it was done for publicity anyway.she's not exactly big breasted is she so no wonder they used long lenses.

Knowing full well ? Staying in a private chateau, in order to avoid invasions of privacy. is "knowing full well " ? Some people just can't win. Ok, i don't particularly like royalty either, but i don't let that affect my judgement. It was a blatant invasion of privacy. The future queen, thinks " i know i'll get us some publicity, look everyone , i've got no clothes on ". Do me a favour , !

Protesting about it, is creating customers for the gutter press. They would be better just igoring it, or informing the countries who are home to these publications, they will be off the visiting list. Frogs , Italians , and Irish.........no great loss if we fall out with them.

Excellent comment it's just not realised how the general publics dignity has been taken away by crude surveillance techniques. I bet Kate isn't X rayed along with other so called prominent people when they pass through airports not like us cattle.

probably because she still thinks she can do as she pleases, like she did as a commoner, and you are right, they, especialy William, know what the press are like, you would have thought he could have said something along the lines of " luv, put em away...just in case!"

This kind of 'story' only serves to keep the 'real news' off the front pages. Quite comical that Richard Desmond, who made his fortune from publishing pornpgraphy, is 'so outraged' enough with the publishing of such a photo that he is pulling his money out of the Irish newspaper. What a hypocrite. He's probably after a knighthood some day. It's okay to publish pornographic pictures of ordinary men and women but a royal princess? How dare they? Hypocrite.

Forget about who the "model" is for the moment - I think it's a bl**dy cheek to take personal photos of anyone without their permission. Imagine a personal photo of your wife/daughter/whoever suddenly appearing on the noticeboard at your workplace, for instance.
