TV bosses broke rules with Dannii Minogue milk chat

TV bosses have been censured by standards watchdogs for allowing singer Dannii Minogue to promote a milk product during an interview.

The Australian star appeared on presenter Lorraine Kelly's morning show last November and during the chat she told viewers about a drink she had "discovered" in her native country, branded it "amazing", and gave tips on where to buy it.

Her advice was ruled to be in breach of strict broadcasting guidelines on product promotion because viewers were not warned Minogue has a commercial deal with the milk company.

Bosses at ITV told officials at the Office of Communications (Ofcom) that no one connected with the show had received payment for the references to the product.

But Ofcom chiefs ruled the effects of Minogue's words were to "promote and endorse" the drink and that the singer's comments "went beyond what would be justified for editorial reasons". ITV bosses have been advised to "take further steps to ensure compliance in this area".
