UK Servicewoman Gives Birth In Afghanistan
A British servicewoman has given birth while serving in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said.
The woman - who is understood to have been unaware of her pregnancy - had a son at Camp Bastion on Tuesday.
Both mother and baby are in a stable condition and are due to be flown home within days after being treated by a specialist medical team from the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
An MoD spokesman said: "We can confirm that on September 18 a UK servicewoman serving in Afghanistan gave birth in the Camp Bastion Field Hospital to a baby boy.
"Mother and baby are both in a stable condition in the hospital and are receiving the best possible care.
"A specialist Paediatric Retrieval Team is being prepared and will deploy in the next few days in order to provide appropriate care for mother and baby on the flight home."
The spokesman added: "It is not military policy to allow servicewomen to deploy on operations if they are pregnant. In this instance the MoD was unaware of her pregnancy.
"As with all medical cases, when the need arises, individuals are returned to the UK for appropriate treatment/care."
According to the Daily Mail, the woman served as a gunner with the Royal Artillery, and had been deployed with the 17th Mechanised Brigade since March.
The newspaper said she only discovered she was pregnant after she went to medics complaining of stomach pains, and the baby was born five weeks premature.

That's a refreshing change! Some good news from the 'Stan for a change. Congratulations to the parents. Some interesting name choices available under the circumstances I should think! :-)

"Christ. Being sick every morning and this bloated stomach is doing my head in. I'm sure it's nothing though!" No chance

Jenny Caine
It is possible! I did it right until I was rushed in and turned out to be in labour!

Louise Smith
I wasnt sick nor did I have a bloated tummy but she would have had a full medical before leaving for Afghanistan

Congratulations to all concerned, so nice to have good news from Afganistan for a change. A new meaning to "Daddy's/Mummy's little Soldier".

Peter Coates
Hope its not one of the tallybans.

No she was deployed in March, baby is 5 weeks premature so should have been born end October, so rough guess was concieved in January. Honestly men! LOL

I wonder what nationality the baby will be - Afghan or British ?

eastonandrea
Yeah! kinda wondered that myself?

Lorgar Aurelian
Pretty gutted if it got an Afghan passport...

John Byrne
Id not be surprised if the British Government insisted the baby is Afghan.

Isla Clare Griffiths
Do the maths, she gave birth just before getting to 8 months, a tour of duty in Afghanistan is 6 months!! Hardly think she would go on a jolly out there 2 months before working there.. Good luck to her and the little man, and to daddy too!!

Eric Clutterbean
can you fit a baby seat and buggy in a tank

Julie Crumpton
Good one, Eric! Lol!

Cripes! I dread to think of the charges this woman will face when you are charged for having toothache if you have neglected to go to the dentist and for getting sunburn. They're very hot on precautions...

Lorgar Aurelian
My old PTI gave me 20 press ups every day for having too long a surname for his clipboard. Ahhh, they were the days...

movvi
Oh dear! Bet you have fine abs though!

Lorgar Aurelian
Once upon a time i did...

Louise Smith
well put movvi..... you do get charged for sun burn and tooth neglect. She would also have had a full medical inspection before going to Afghanistan.

I find myself asking why a pregnancy test is not routine for all female service personnel going on deployment. Also, with due espect to those ladies who say it happened to them - how can you not know you are pregnant? My son kicked me really hard from 5 months on if hadn't known before I certainly would have known then.

I have had 5 babies and what with the all-day sickness and just overall discomfort, there's no way i wouldn't have known. Maybe in a war zone you feel different to normal anyway,it must be WAY more stressful. If you dont have a regular cycle maybe you wouldn't notice the other changes(especially a first time mum) GL to her and her baby
