UK Unemployment Rises To 2.67 Million
UK unemployment has risen for the eighth month in a row to reach 2.67 million.
New figures from the Office for National Statistics show the number of people out of work increased by 48,000 in the three months to December.
It takes the jobless rate to 8.4%.
It includes a 22,000 increase in youth unemployment, taking the number of 16 to 24 year-olds out of work to 1.04 million.
The number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance rose by 6,900 in January, the eleventh successive monthly increase.
This takes the of claimant count of unemployed people up to 1.6 million.
The number of women claiming the allowance increased by 1,500 last month to 531,700, the highest figure since the summer of 1995.
It has been three years since unemployment broke through the two million mark, with Wednesday's figures prompting more calls for Government action.
Members of the Right to Work campaign group staged a protest outside Department for Work and Pensions offices in Whitehall to mark the release of the latest unemployment figures.
The 48,000 increase in unemployment was the smallest quarterly rise since lastsummer and less than forecast.
John Philipott, chief economist of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) told Sky News that while the figures for the final three months of 2011 were not as bad as expected, 2012 was going to be a tough year.
He said: "The problem for 2012 is that most analysts, including ourselves, expect the economy to grow very slowly at best and that will inevitably lead to rising unemployment.
"One hopes it won't rise to the three million level but something short of that is probably likely."
A recent study by the CIPD showed that job prospects are set to worsen in the coming months as more firms make workers redundant.
UK GDP shrank by 0.2% in the last three months of 2011, raising fears of another recession if growth contracts again in the coming quarter.
The Government said Wednesday's figures showed that despite continuing economic challenges, the labour market was stabilising.
The minister for welfare reform Lord Freud said: "The latest figures show someencouraging signs of stability despite the challenging economic climate.
"With more people in employment and a rise in vacancies, it is clear theprivate sector is still creating jobs.
"However, we are not complacent. With more people in the labour market we knowthat competition for those jobs is tough and we will continue to make it ourpriority to find people work."
The latest ONS data also shows that employment rose by 60,000 in the final quarter of 2011 to 29 million, inflated by increased part-time jobs.
A record number of people are working part-time because they cannot find full-time jobs.
Earlier in the week the TUC calculated that unemployment could be as high as 6.3 million in the UK if a different counting measure was used, highlighting the "true scale" of joblessness.
Labour shadow work and pensions secretary Liam Byrne said: "This Government is creating a jobless generation, with more young people out of work than ever before.
"Today's figures make for grim reading for the millions of squeezed families desperate for good news on the economy. With unemployment at its highest rate since 1995 and long term youth unemployment doubling in the last year, ministers must now get a grip.
"It is painfully clear that the Government's welfare to work programmes are not doing the job and the time for dithering is over - complacent ministers must act now before a generation is left scarred by their failure."
Wednesday's ONS data also showed UK average earnings increased by 2.0% in the year to December, unchanged from the previous month.
what do you think?

they already have created a huge number of non jobs at all the super markets making all employees part time and therefore on temporary contracts and paying salaries that no one can live on .just to get them off the unemployment registers .even though the companies can afford proper salaries and full time jobs out of their huge profits .the profits end up overseas and everyone in normal employment pays more tax in this country to pay for the tax the companies do not pay because they have all the mp,s from all parties on their boards on lucrative agreements. the hard working employees pay for everything .mp,s and large companies are laughing .

IRONSTINE
This will continue with the coalition massaging the true inflation, and jobless figures,to cover their incompetence.

keith
I think you will find the figures were already fiddled by labour. Which is why we are in this mess! So get real. No doubt you voted for labour so don't moan.

Lee Bennett
Utter rubbish Keith and you know it .It was exactly the same the last time the tories were in.ANd as for voting Labour ,whats that got to do with it .No one voted for this turkey and he still thinks he has the right to be top dog.Get him out

stevie may
3 million unemployed on its way. Thank you capitalism for all youve done for us. Thank you greed. Thank you corrupt politicians

keith
Stevie, It's all part of labour's heritage.

Sharon Houghton
Thanks Mr c n co that's another fine mess you got the country in. More people out of work and very little employment. More unemployed on benefits to be labled lazy scroungers. Have a nice day

We have recently asked for a replacement driver for a minimum of 6 months while one of our drivers has to into hospital for an operation. Not work related. So far, in 2 weeks we have had just 4 applicants. (1) Can't work on Tuesday mornings or Thursday afternoons as he has to look after his children. (2) He has been banned from driving for 18 months for drink driving. (Why did the Job Centre send him at all?) (3) Not willing to have early starts or late finishes. (4) He can get more in benefits by not working, but can I just sign his card to say he was not suitable. I am sure we will get someone willing to work sometime.

Edgar Beckett
I hope you signed three of those cards stating that they turnded down the offer of employment

There are plenty of jobs out there for those people who will do anything including cleaning and such like. If you take more than one job to make ends meet then so be it. You can't pick and choose so just take what you can until something else comes up. If you are in work then your more likely to be accepted for the job you really want. Stop being picky and just take whats out there!!!!! I have done the above and its great as I'm doing all the little jobs that no one wants to do and I'm doing very well!!

paulnaylor
certain areas may have plenty jobs, but i can tell you for sure that others dont and its a total rat race, if you dont have the right skill set where i live jobs are thin on the ground even at minimum wage, sometimes up to 200 applicants per job...its easy to say go further a field to get a job but at minimum wage its not long before it becomes uneconomical as travel add up and i dont see many employers willing to pay bed and breakfast, if you happen to live in a part of the uk that is prosperous in these times thank your lucky stars...as my post above says, i have just got back to work and have a start date after two years of misery and hardship, not everyone who is unemployed is a scrounger, far from it....also most on benefit live from day to day its not life its exsitence.....this last two years has taught me a lot, and i will be much more tolerable and humble person that i was before....remember the media has its own agenda and likes to sway peoples minds about unemployment, even more so the the government.

Good working gets u no where anyway

Bob Attoe
think the gouverment should make the job centre like a recruitment agency and get people into work. so they have no lame excuse for not doing it

Lee Bennett
well done Camerloon another milestone in your fantastic career .But still so you would have us believe inflation is down a bit ...........IS IT HELL !. You are incompetent ,and way out of your depth .General election NOW.

keith
And who would you vote for Lee? Let me guess- It begins with L and ends with R. We had your lot in for 13 years and now we are paying the price. You never learn.

Lee Benefit

Lee Bennett
you saying i am on benefits ? wrong if you are Lead head .

paulnaylor
after being unemployed for near 2 years and claiming benefit for one of the two years I have got employment at last, a certain person called me a benefit scrounger and a jezza kyle type, when it was just off the cuff and totally untrue ( i will mention no name)....but what it shows he was wrong about that, just as he is wrong about most of the rubbish he posts.

how many thousands of people are now only working part time so cannot claim JSA?that way there is lot less people without full time work but not on national statistics.theres a lot more people out of work than the figures tell you.actually out of work but either cannot claim JSA or over 60s that can claim pension credit to boost there income but arent signing on claiming JSA.this could be a few million but the government dont include this is there figures.how convienient for them.makes everything seam so much better!isnt the country doing so well.i think not unless your a politician banker stockbroker or a big business man at the top.nothing ever changes

Surely anyone with half a brain cell can see that if people are being made to retire later, there will be less job vacancies. Under the present policy, this is going to get worse and worse until there's civil unrest caused by this problem. I would rather have 2.5 million pensioners on the streets, than youths. If the youth don't have jobs, they won't buy houses- housing market suffers. If that suffers then economy will not pick up. Solution- reduce retirement age below previous age, and put all public sector workers on same deal as everyone else- this will sort the problems out quickly, and before there's blood on the streets.

keith
Wrong Solution. Right Solution-No immigration. Problem solved!

paulnaylor
you both make good points, hard to say which is better solution

Sarah Lee, The wages I pay are well above the average. I have 9 drivers and no- one has left us in over 5 years. They also get a monthly bonus of £100 each for wearing uniform, being punctual and keeping their vehicles clean and scratch free. They get free health care provided by the Company, free tea and coffee, and we contribute to a pension scheme. They get over the statutory holidays and free use of a Holiday Home for their families if they want it. I think they get a good deal.

At last, an employer that values their staff, and in return you get loyalty and respect, and they provide good customer service. Unfortunately majority of employers right up yards of rules and rights in your contract, but all meaningless, as they fail to reward loyalty. Loyal staff are the most valuable asset for any company, money is wasted by so many of the big names on recruiting and re-training, instead of rewarding loyal staff! Sad fact in UK to-day. Congratulations to you for being an enlightened employer.

Help please My son in law has been searching for a plasterers job or labourer or kitchen assistant job for over a year without luck. He was previously self employed as a plasterer In the meanwhile jobcentr plus have stopped his benefit(months ago) so he lives on my daughters low income. Now they are struggling with a baby Is JObecentre plus allowed to stop his benefits? Can he get help anywhere? PLease help if you can

paulnaylor
i think it depends on if his national insurance stamp is up to date, it is possible that because he was self employed he may have let his his NI contributions slip.... in which case he would not qualify for dole money, he would however qualify for social security but that is means tested and his partners income in this instance is taken into consideration, so even though you say she has a low income the DWP may deem it to be enough to live on.... ps. also if he has paid his NI to date i think dole money only lasts for 12 months then switches over to scocial security.

Paulnaylor -- thank you

nice one peter,

Richard Maitland
Whats killing this country is employers being allowed to keep importing cheap labour from abroad. As soon as they ask for a proper living wage they are dispensed with and join the dole queue and more cheap labour is imported. We should make it law that employers have to employ at least 80% of their work force from people actually born in the UK. Cameron is literally giving the green light to the SLAVE TRADE and it has to stop. Where is his promise to control immigration, as he said he would do during the election.

Suppose the Coalition could always create a load on non-jobs in the public sector & pay them 30% above market rates by borrowing a shed load of money............Then let our kids worry about paying it all back?? No sorry Loiebour tried that & it failed big time. Silly me.
