US Mother Charged Over Daughter's Tanning

A woman from New Jersey who appears to have an obsession with fake tanning has been charged with child endangerment after taking her then five-year-old daughter into a tanning salon.
Authorities say Patricia Krentcil's daughter, now six, turned up at her primary school in Nutley, New Jersey, with a sunburn on April 24, prompting a school nurse to contact police.
The heavily-tanned mother, 44, pleaded not guilty to the charge when she appeared in a Newark courtroom on Wednesday.
Krentcil's chocolate-brown hue testifies to countless hours spent under the intense ultraviolet light of a tanning bed or out in the sun soaking up rays.
But she denied bringing her fair-skinned daughter into the tanning booth of a salon that she frequents.
"I would not permit it," she told CBS TV in New York.
The owner of City Tropics Tanning said his staff did not see Krentcil get into the stand-up booth with her daughter when she came in for an April 22 tanning session.
"Of course not," said the man, who was identified only as Anthony.
"My workers wouldn't let a child go into a tanning room. She was outside with her father," he said. "If she went into the tanning room I think she would have disintegrated. She's a little girl."
The owner said police never came in to speak with his workers about the incident.
New Jersey is among several states that have adopted regulations prohibiting anyone age 14 or under from using ultraviolet devices because of the risk of skin cancer.
what do you think?

What does she look like? Does she really think people say "Wow what a lovely tan you have""? NOT. Waste of Space woman.

Surely the tanning salon should be prosecuted. Don't they have some sort of duty of care? They must know that excessive use of these sunbeds can cause cancer? If not, then they are no better than a pusher feeding someones drug habit.

sounds like another excuse to pass responsibility for ones own actions.

an homage to the b&w minstrals perhaps?

The mother is obviously a sandwich short of a picnic. Who in their right mind would tan to that extent, she looks really weird.

I first saw this cllip on TV with the sound down and thought she had been rescued from a fire! she looks like something from Planet of the Apes.

The child in this video clip does not appear particularly tanned to me and staff of the salon say they did not see the child get into the booth. Although the mother looks horrendous and is clearly some sort of oddball, the child looks perfectly normal. She could have gotten her complexion simply by playing out in the sun. This being the case, there does not seem to be any evidence to support the charge.

Judging by the girl's colouring she would burn quite easily.

My dad was in the The British Army. He fought in numerous wars overseas, no offence to them. It was his job, wasn't it? All the people in those hot countries tended to cover their heads with black or white cloth. My relatives and their friends didn't bother because we were British. We just sat on the beaches with no shirts, no hats and no suntan lotion because in those days males didn't tend to bother with suntan lotion. Sometimes, we used it but not always. For a tiny bit of skin cancer, you have to have quite a large area of skin removed. Sometimes, you have to go back to have more skin removed to ensure all the cancer is gone. It tends to regrow back elsewhere. That woman's skin resembles someone who emigrates to Australia. That is the effect the Sun has on skin. I didn't seem to use to tan but never knew why. I went a bit brown-ish. Her young girl should stay inside and play computer games, read books, play with dolls. If she goes out on her bike or skateboard, she should wear a hat and suntan lotion but plenty of clothing. I know people with skin cancer. They have to keep having bits of skin cut out. It is very well worth not having.

Doesn't that woman look in the mirror, I am not trying to be cruel but how can she think she looks good with that tanning, it looks so awful. I hope it isn't true that she took her child to the tanning salon because it would be a very stupid and irresponsible thing to do.

This woman looks as if she has just been rescued from a fire. She looks as if she needs a good scrub in a bath to get her clean. I would never have said she was 44. She looks older than my grandmother when she was in her 70s.
