Video: Cop Shoots Old Man Reaching For Cane
Newly-released video shows the moment a police officer shot an elderly man who reached for his walking stick during a traffic stop.
The South Carolina officer, Terrance Knox, is on administrative leave as state agents investigate the after-dark shooting last month of 70-year-old Bobby Canipe.
In the dash-cam video, Mr Canipe gets out of his pickup car and reaches in the back of the vehicle, pulling out an object with the tip pointed at the officer.
Mr Knox, who said he had mistaken the cane for a shotgun, yells "Whoa!" several times as he fires half a dozen shots.
"It's a walking stick," Mr Canipe, a Vietnam war veteran, said as the shots ended.
Mr Knox immediately ran to Mr Canipe, who was hit once and has since been released from hospital.
He is expected to make a full recovery.
Mr Knox began to sob minutes after the shooting when another officer arrived at the scene and put his arm around him.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating and will send its report to a prosecutor, who will decide if any charges should be filed.
