Weller: 'I'm an alcoholic'

Paul Weller has confessed he is an alcoholic.

The former The Jam frontman gave up drinking booze in 2010 following his marriage to girlfriend Hannah Andrews, and now leads a teetotal lifestyle.

Weller has now opened up about his years of heavy drinking, admitting he realised he has an addiction to alcohol.

The singer/songwriter tells The Times, "I feel fitter now. I go to the gym. Stopped drinking about 16 months ago... Time for a lifestyle change. I couldn't keep doing it. It was killing me... I miss the silliness (of being drunk)... I'm not one of those people who can just have a couple of drinks. If it's two, it might as well be 20. If it's 20, it might as well be 40...

"I think I'm an alcoholic, definitely. Yeah. I would have thought so. It's hard to know where a p**shead (drunk) becomes an alkie (alcoholic). Fine line. But yeah, I think so."

When asked if it was a struggle to quit drinking, the rocker replies, "Not really. I didn't want to go to AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) or any of that b**locks."

In 2008, Weller was pictured sprawled drunkenly on the ground in a street in Prague, Czech Republic after a boozing session with Andrews.

what do you think?

Hi does Paul make appearances at events aimed at the young people who might become vulnerable to the peer pressure of the drinking culture. Possibly just a song about his finding that drink has made stuff go away

..so let me get this straight, he says he's an alcoholic? but he gave up drinking 2 years ago? so he's not an alcoholic then? but he definately thinks he is? but it wasn't a struggle to stop drinking either? I'm thinking that he may have taken this interview while on crack!

I wish him well. Brave enough to admit his addiction and do something positive about it - good on him. Loved his music and if his experience of booze can be a warning to our vulnerable teenagers, crack on!! I don't care who they listen to, as long as they get the message about the dangers of excess.
