Woman 'Killed Two Kids' Before Crashing Car
A woman has been charged with two counts of murder after her two children were found dead in a hotel room in California.
The bodies of the 10-year-old girl and boy, 13, were discovered after the mother tried to crash her car into an electrical box outside a Home Depot store in an apparent suicide attempt.
Police said the 42-year-old suspect Marilyn Edge had a propane tank in her vehicle in Costa Mesa, which she reportedly thought would make the car explode.
"It was clear that it was an intentional act," Sergeant Tim Starn said.
She also placed an electrical cord around her neck and attempted to strangle herself when officers arrived, it is claimed.
Police said Edge from Scottsdale in Arizona appeared to have been suicidal.
Officers reportedly smashed the car's windows and rescued the woman who then told police where to find her son and daughter, said police spokesman Corporal Anthony Bertagna.
The children were discovered in a third-floor room of a Hampton Inn and Suites hotel in nearby Santa Ana.
According to the officer, the cause of death was under investigation but no weapon had been recovered from the scene.
The woman was treated in hospital and then released into the custody of police.
She is reportedly due to appear in court on Tuesday.
