Woman 'Mauled To Death By Daughter's Dogs'

A post-mortem examination will be carried out today on the body of a woman who is believed to have been mauled to death by dogs she had gone to feed.

Neighbours reported hearing screams and dogs barking as the woman went to feed the pets in the back garden of the home in Morden, South London, on Tuesday.

The great grandmother had gone to the property in Rutland Drive and was feeding the pet dogs belonging to her daughter when she was mauled, according to reports.

It is understood that the woman suffered multiple injuries in the dog attack. She also suffered a heart attack.

Police were called at around 6.25pm but the 71-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Five dogs including two Bordeaux bulldogs and a mongrel were taken away.

Police say none of the animals were banned breeds and no arrests have been made.

Neighbour Kevin Hamilton told Sky News he heard noises outside at about 5.15pm on Tuesday.

"I heard screaming and dogs barking. The screaming was not specific screaming - there were no words in it. It was very much like hysterical screaming - no 'help' or anything like that.

"I thought no more of it, and believed it to just be the kids playing."

A spokeswoman for Scotland Yard said of the victim: "She had sustained a number of injuries. An investigation is under way to establish a cause of death."

The post-mortem examination will be carried out at St George's Hospital in Tooting.

Two adjoining semi-detached houses were cordoned off by police.

Four dog breeds are banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act - the Pit Bull Terrier, the Japanese Tosa, the Dogo Argentino and the Fila Braziliero.

There have been calls for more breeds to be put on the banned list and for the law to be toughened up after a number of attacks by dogs.

what do you think?

Dogs are dirty....fact. I always think there is something wrong with owners who keep great big dogs in particular. Usually male dogs with their clobber hanging out on show all the time. Slobbering all over the place and eating all sorts of cr ap, and I mean cr ap. Is it because they are insecure and need to dominate something powerful. Why would you want one of these filty things in your home, let alone three or four of them. Dirtying and stinking up the place. Ban them, they are all dangerous...another fact. And I don't care what all you weird dog (people killers)lovers think of me, I am quite happy with my opinons on this subject. So, jog on.

Yes and im afraid dog fighting is making a come back.they start off by getting the dog to bite at trees.then cats and small dogs and so on.its also got to be said that a dog left alone very quickly turns ferrel.and i suspect this might be the case here.it would only take one of the dogs to attack the woman and then the rest of the "pack" would join in.

My comments keep being removed - I don't know why. In a nutshell, I agreed, Shaun - Staffies are the favoured breed for corruption by the posers who want them snarling and pulling on the leash to boost their odd images. I only said this was a shame as they are really very reliable pooches.

"It was very much like hysterical screaming... I thought no more of it." Oh dear, poor woman. I wonder if these dogs had been left for too long and were hungry. Pet dogs don't usually behave in this way and no-one in their right mind would ask an elderly woman to risk looking after them if they were dangerous, I would hope. Terrible tragedy.

That may well be true Gillie Louise but only a risk with certain breeds, these big powerful dogs go to prove this, I have 3 dogs at the mo' none of them aggressive they know i'm the pack leader, a woman I work with has 6 right now and she is top dog there, problems arise when prople take on these strong willed animals and dont know owt about training or dominating them. I'm more of a puddy person but i do like some dogs very much. I do not believe that certain breeds are bad per se. I think that the difficulties occur when dogs with any aggressive tendencies are owned by those who either want them to be vicious or have no idea how to establish themselves as "top dog" in their own home. You just should never allow a dog to dominate you or get away with any dodgy behaviour. Very powerful breeds are not intrinsically more dangerous than little dogs, just more dangerous because the physica damge they can inflict is much greater

Interestingly, poodles and airdales, as well as German Shepherds are very high in the "most likely to bite" league.
