Woman Played Dead To Survive Mama Bear Attack
A woman attacked by a bear in Alaska while out for a run has told how she stayed silent in a foetal position to survive.
Jessica Gamboa, 25, said the brown bear picked her up and threw her to the ground before pummelling her several times with her paws - while she played dead.
"I actually can't even believe this actually really happened," she said in an interview from her hospital bed.
"It seems still surreal, just for the fact that I'm still alive - seems unreal."
The mauling left Ms Gamboa, a mother of one from Sacramento, California, with lacerations to her neck, arms and legs, a torn ear and neck fractures.
She is married to a soldier assigned at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, where the attack happened.
The bear was with two cubs at the time. After it left, Ms Gamboa called for her husband, who was also jogging nearby, but got no response.
She eventually crawled toward a road where a soldier happened to drive past.
