Woman Raped After Being Thrown Off Bus Over 20p

Police have praised the courage of a woman who was raped and left unconscious after being thrown off her last bus home because she was 20p short of the fare.
Detectives spoke out after Joseph Moran, 19, was found guilty by a jury at Nottingham Crown Court of rape and wounding with intent to cause GBH.
The court had heard how the woman had been out with friends in the city on December 9 last year for an early Christmas celebration.
It was told she only had £4.80 to pay the £5 fare to Mansfield. The driver would not waive the 20p nor wait for her to visit an ATM opposite the bus stop.
She began walking along Mansfield Road out of the city where she had arranged to be collected by her mother.
But as she approached the entrance to Forest Recreation Ground she was grabbed by Moran, of Sneinton, and dragged into the park where he subjected her to what the jury heard was an appalling and protracted attack.
She was found by police officers just after 4am, unconscious, and having suffered terrible injuries.
She was taken to hospital and police began an immediate investigation. Moran was arrested within minutes.
Detective Chief Inspector Rob Griffin, who was in charge of the investigation, described Moran as "a singularly depraved and highly dangerous individual who committed a grotesque and extremely violent crime".
He said: "In the weeks and months since that terrible night, this young woman has undergone extensive surgery to repair the physical damage she suffered.
"She has also received support to help her deal with the mental and emotional injuries.
"Moran refused to accept his guilt, and so added to the torment she and her family have had to endure.
"Despite her lasting physical, mental and emotional scars, this young woman has shown the most tremendous courage and dignity, despite the many challenges she has had to face, and has played a vital role in securing his conviction."
He added: "Moran is a dangerous and violent man. A thorough police investigation and a courageous victim have ensured that he has been taken off the streets and no longer poses a risk to other women."
Asked about reports that other passengers failed to give the victim the 20p she needed, the officer said: "It's difficult to speak for those people.
"We each make our own judgments and the people on that bus made their judgments that night.
"Knowing what they know now, they may wish they had given 20p."
In a statement, the mother of the victim thanked those involved in the case.
She said: "The last six months have been a very difficult time for my daughter and our family. We would like to thank the police, the prosecuting counsel and the medical staff at the Queen's Medical Centre for the care and support they have shown to us during this time."
Moran will appear at the crown court on July 27 for sentencing.

Hope he gets life. He will get it in prison. People with crimes against women, children and old people are weak and sick individuals. A complete AMD utter coward.

The bus driver should be named and his face shown to the public. . .

I felt compelled to read this article as I couldn't believe the actions of the bus driver has he even been reprimanded by his employers has the bus company offered any compensation for his indifferance to this young girls plight, its sickening to think people in a responsible job dont have any commen sense he could have put the 20p himself lets hope the bus company change their policy and employ people who can think out of the box

DermottJoe
unfortunatley susan, proffits come first for most companies now.after the liberating sixties and seventies we have crawled back under the repressive cap doffing victorian era where the likes of us dont have an opinion, and are actively encouraged from thinking outside the box, from cradle to grave.all in order for the rich to stay rich.....by the way you have the same name as one of my favourite potters/artists.

i think that the bus company should use a little christian understanding in such a situation,i wonder if they needed 20p to stay afloat as a business, would they expect a good samartan to sponsor them? any company who behaves like this will not be successful,as for the bus load of unchristian passengers who refused a human a 20p,well some day in the future you will come across a situation where this will haunt you, when you get into a similar situation

Paul Scott
What can you get for 20p. The bus driver should be ashamed of this meaness. Poor girl.

Gordon Wright
I trust the driver of the bus can sleep soundly at night............ Not to mention the passengers, one of whom could surely have spared twenty pence.......

DermottJoe
because of the pay when you get on the bus situation, the passengers may not have been aware of the situatrion. im sorry but the blame for not getting on the bus lies firmly and squarley on the moraly wrong bus drivers shoulders.

I wish this young woman well and hope she makes a full recovery both physically and mentally. I thought it was common practice to take the name and address of a person who couldn't pay their fare on public transport so that the money could be recovered later. I've certainly been on trains and buses when this has happened. Shame on the driver for not doing this so late at night, especially as she was only 20p short of a £5 fare. I would like to think that if I'd been on the bus I'd have given her 20p. I have done it for people in similar situations. You never know when it might be you.

It's not about being thrown off a bus. It's about the state of the Times we live in. She should have been able to walk home safely without having to worry about being mugged raped or battered.

DermottJoe
you are right of course ,she should have been able to walk home in safety.but...how many times do we hear of uncaring drivers on PUBLIC transport, doing the moraly wrong thing, a 4% discrepancey in fare,im sorry but the driver should hold himself just as culpable for not having a caring bone is his body.i found myself as a youth in the same position,(only having no money because i left it in my other pants) and was very grateful not only to the then conductor who saw my plight, but to passengers on the bus who offered to pay after hearing my story. so i think your wrong when you say its not about being thrown off a bus, because without this action the rest would not have happened.

The scumbag won't get the sentence he deserves.

I wonder how this bus driver would have felt if this had happened to his own daughter?? It's 20p people, you don't need to dig deep for that to help someone out. I've paid for someones parking before because they hadn't any change and my mum has bought a tank of petrol for a guy who was completely stuck without his wallet. It all comes back to you in the end so think twice before you snub people.

We cannot blame the bus driver, he was doing his job under the rules laid out for him. yes it was only 20p, but 20p for this poor lass, 10p for the next and 50 for someone else - where do you draw the line? Yes this time it had dreadful consequences, but not when it happened to me several years ago. Derek is right, this is more about the fact that our country is no longer safe than 20p and lets face it, written differently no-one would be pointing the finger at anyone other than the perpetrator! Hindsight is always 20/20, the driver should not be bought to task, it is not his fault. it was unfortunate for this lass, but chances are this lowlife would have attacked someone that night, what clever and imaginative reporting to insinuate that it could have been avoided for 20p?

Caring sharing Trent/Barton strike again. I hope the bus driver sleeps easy these days. He would have had to pay a whole 20p to prevent this girls attack and well done to the passengers for not helping out. This is typical of Mansfield folk though (from stories I hear). I never threw any lone female off a bus I was driving for purely this reason and did my utmost to ensure their safe journey home. Let's see if the Judiciary can wise up on this one and slam the perpetrator with the maximum possible punishment and no entitlement to parole. If they don't, he'll do it again!
