Wreck-It Ralph smashes nation's box office

Animated kids' comedy Wreck-It Ralph has destroyed its rivals to reach the top of the nation's box office chart on its opening weekend.

The cartoon adventure story, featuring the voices of John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman, racked up takings of £4.5 million.

It was sad news for the cast of Les Miserables, as the movie musical's four-week run at the top of the chart ended following weekend takings of just £1.6 million.

New romantic comedy I Give It A Year's honeymoon period was over before it began, as ticket sales of £1.4 million on its opening weekend placed the movie third, and Django Unchained slipped two places to fourth, with takings of £1.07 million.

Denzel Washington's plane-based drama Flight descended from third to fifth place, with £925,049.
