Brits in stink over £10m garlic scam

Two Britons said to be behind a £10 million garlic smuggling scam are being hunted by police in Sweden.

Investigators believe the pair - not named by police - shipped tons of the pungent veg into neighbouring Norway from China and then trafficked it across the border to avoid EU import taxes.

State prosecutor Thomas Ahlstrand told local media: "We're talking about big money and a profitable operation. It involves many shipments of garlic."

According to a Swedish arrest warrant the pair set up a company in Norway in 2009 and have since smuggled more than 100 tons of garlic into Sweden to dodge a 9.6 per cent import duty.

Wouldn't it have been cheaper to just plant 100 tons of garlic in a field?
