Cat walked home - 190 miles

A Florida couple whose cat went missing on holiday were amazed when it made it back within a mile of home - from 190 miles away.

Jacob and Bonnie Richter's four-year-old pet Holly ran off when she was scared by fireworks at the Daytona International Speedway, reports WPBF News.

The distraught couple searched for Holly for days, putting up flyers and alerting rescue agencies, before despondently heading home to West Palm Beach.

Two weeks later, a rescue group spotted the distinctive cat outside of a Daytona Beach restaurant but it had disappeared by the time the Richters could drive there.

And that was the last they heard of Holly - until she showed up, skin and bones, paws rubbed raw and too exhausted to meow, in Barb Mazzola's Palm Beach Gardens yard.

"She was pitiful. She just stood there, ready to collapse," said Ms Mazzola, who rushed to the store for cat food and began feeding the cat she named Cosette.

In a week, Holly was well enough to be coaxed into a cat carrier and taken to the vet, where she was scanned for a microchip.

The chip came back to match the Richters, who couldn't believe the news. Holly had travelled about 190 miles in 62 days.

"It was quite a journey for this little girl," said Jacob Richter. "We just can't believe she came home."

Why on earth did they take the poor cat on holiday!? It's not a dog. I know people are reluctant to leave their cats with someone or put them in a cattery but that is far safer than taking them with you!! Cats are independent and territorial animals who like their familiar surroundings. Dogs are pack animals and obey and follow their humans around. The characteristics are not interchangeable! I would be terrified constantly if I took my cat away with me! Having said all that, I'm pleased it found its way home eventually.

I've had cats all my life, but have owned one who would travel with me. He travelled in a rucksack on my back while i cycled, with his head popping out the top!. He walked on a leash and when we visted other houses he would go out to pee and then wait at the door. Only one i've ever had like that- a British Blue and a gentle giant of a moggie.

Taking a cat on holiday ,don't think so,probably took it with intention of dumping it not realising it may JUST find it's way back home.

A man and wife had a very intelligent cat and the wife used to speak to it more than she did her own hubby.the husband became jealous and decided to get rid of the cat so he drove it twenty miles away and dumped it.but on his return home he found the cat sitting in the wifes lap.later the husband decided to drive the cat 50 miles away and dumped it. again on his return the cat was sat on the wifes lap.this happened over and over again.right said the husband thats it and he drove the cat 200 miles away and dumped it.later that night the wife received a call from her husband.he asked" please im lost can you ask the cat how i get home".BOOM BOOM
