Cough syrup sparks murder hunt
Police quizzed a Devon grandmother on suspicion of having a dead body in her car - only to find a broken bottle of cough syrup.
Grandmother-of-five Pat Major, 60, was spotted stuffing something into her boot by another motorist in a supermarket car park in Newton Abbot before driving off.
The concerned 'witness' tailed Mrs Major's Nissan Micra and called 999 when she thought she saw blood dripping from her boot, reports the Western Morning News.
"It was initially reported to us by a lady who said she was following a car which, she said, appeared to have blood pouring from the boot," a police spokesman said.
"The car pulled into an address in Newton Abbot and the occupant of the car got out and went inside."
When officers arrived at the property, they discovered the liquid was blackcurrant cough mixture and the blood-soaked body was squashed bags of shopping.
Mrs Major was able to see the funny side of the mix-up, the spokesman added.
