Man drives off with $5,000 on car roof

A US man lost nearly $5,000 after forgetting he had put it on the top of his car before driving off.

The father of two, named only as Jason, had placed the grey bank bag containing the money, worth £3,050, on top of his car.

"Bonehead move of the year. I was loading my children in the car and I put the money on the roof and drove off with it," Jason told local New Mexico TV station KRQE-TV.

"Part of it was for the mortgage, but the rest we were to spend doing a remodel on the house."

Although the stay-at-home dad knows that the odds of retrieving the money are very slim, he remains hopeful.

"Maybe the right person will find it and know that times are tough and that someone needs this," he said.

"It's good pause for reflection, set my priorities ya know, just slow down."
