Shaved Labradoodle sparks lion scare

A US man who shaved his dog's hair to make it look like a lion inadvertently sparked fears of a big cat on the loose.

Worried residents of Norfolk, Virginia, rang 911 claiming a fearsome jungle cat was wandering the streets.

Officers checked with Virginia Zoo to make sure all their lions were accounted for before launching an investigation into the claims.

But panic was replaced by laughter when it emerged the 'big cat' was local celebrity canine, Charles the Monarch.

Daniel Painter shaved his Labradoodle to look like the lion mascot of nearby Old Dominion University.

Mr Painter said his pet dog, who has more than 2,000 friends on Facebook, is often mistaken for a lion thanks to his furry mane.

"I tell people he's a Lab-a-lion, and half the people believe that," he told The Virginian Pilot.

He should be fined for cruelty and violating the dogs dignity. Obviously a looser seeking publicity.

I think my main concern would be if some trigger happy person took a pot shot at the doggy. Especially in the good old USA

I don't understand the people who think it is cruel to groom your dog. Most dogs who enter shows are shaved and have ribbons in their fur. Horses have fur shaved to make them look different. Are the protesters on this page going to do something about that too? What about the idiots who put their dogs in clothes and carry them in their handbags? Now that is cruel and should be punished.

Lovely - what a cool looking pooch. I do hope no-one shoots him, thinking he's a lion, but I suppose everyone knows about him now. I don't know why the grumps are so cross - it's far better than those poor sods overbred til they can't see in order for some judge at a show to tick a box about wrinkles! As for his loss of dignity - he seems fine with that. Go Charles!
