A Southamption youngster had a superhero named in his honour - after his mum asked Marvel Comics to help get him to wear his hearing aid.

Anthony Smith's mother Christina wrote to the US comic giant after the youngster refused to wear the device to school.

The four-year-old, who recently moved from Hampshire to New Hampshire in the US, told his worried mum that "superheroes do not wear hearing aids".

Within 24 hours, she received a 1984 comic book featuring superhero Hawkeye wearing a hearing aid after suffering temporary deafness.

And Marvel also created a new character 'The Blue Ear', which was Anthony's nickname for his hearing aid.

Marvel editor Thomas Brennan said: "Our job is to make kids like Anthony believe in heroes and we will do that job."

Little Anthony, who now happily wears his aid to school, suffers from a rare genetic disorder which severely affects his hearing.

His dad Kevin, 41, said: "Anthony is a massive fan of superheroes, especially Spiderman, Captain America and The Avengers.

"One day he told my wife that superheroes don't wear blue ears. We decided to contact Marvel to find out if any of them do.

"We were amazed and thrilled by what they did for us. We are so proud of him and happy that Marvel did this amazing gesture for us."
