Texting newsreader walks into canal

A newsreader has been caught on CCTV walking straight into a freezing canal as she texted her boyfriend.

Laura Safe, 27, plunged into the icy water of the canal outside the Mailbox shopping and leisure complex in Birmingham.

Passer-by, Neil Edginton, 34, rushed to Miss Safe's aid as she flailed about in the water, watched by open-mouthed diners, and pulled her out.

The Capital FM Breakfast Show newsreader emerged unharmed and merely embarrassed at falling into the water in front of so many onlookers.

"I thought ice on the canal was pavement because it looked dark in the corner of my eye," she said.

"I heard a man called out "stop" to me and I looked up at him, but it was too late by that point.

"I tried to get my balance and ended up slipping into the canal. But not before I'd saved my handbag and mobile phone."

After her fall, Miss Safe tweeted: "Oh dear. I should really be called Laura UNsafe after the day I've had! Lol."

Miss Safe, who has been reading the news on the radio station for several months, later phoned her rescuer on-air to thank him for his heroic efforts.

I hope she's grateful it wasn't a busy road she didn't "notice". How pathetic.

Yes - I remember a couple of years ago whilst out walking, a young lad on his mobile just walked into a busy road. Luckily the car braked just in time otherwise he would have been history.

Hilarious! I just love watching people walk down the street, texting. I once saw a woman walk into a bollard and the look on her face was priceless!

I wouldn't mind betting she's one of those who bashes the supermarket trolley into your legs while she's busy texting.

Another stupid person that should stand still when messing about with a phone! I come across numerous people who try to walk into others because they are not concentrating on the world around them. A recent report in our local paper where a schoolgirl about 13 years old walked across a main road in our town centre and was missed by a number of cars travelling in both directions. The problem was that she had a ipod plugged in her ears and was texting on her phone and was completely oblivious of were she was and what she had done.. When she was stopped by a member of the public she complained that hadn't had time to finish and send her text!

I think it is funny, but also pathetic, dizzy and quite sad too. I don't get how she's not aware of anything around her, and the only thing she's aware of is texting her boyfriend. Her head must be full of cotton wool. Whilst we're on the subject, what this fashion of lads walking around texting with one hand, whilst the other is down their jogging bottoms. It looks absolutely ridiculous.

A funny little clip in this case. She didn't harm anyone and presumably this was in her own time. It infuriates me, though, when some others do this. I watch a cleaner sometimes idly pushing a brush with one hand while texting with the other. Sometimes it takes a while for her to twig I'm in the same room! Who is it that's so captivating at the other end?! I also have a friend who has his phone on the table constantly bleeping him with some update during meals out and numerous colleagues who would shudder at the thought of switching their phones off at work for a whole day. The world has gone a little bit mad.

Or parents with small children/babies who are bored and crotchety while they are ignored by their parents who stare at their mobiles and text continually, completely ignoring the poor children. That drives me potty.
