Winterwatch goes One Step Beyond

Suggs /PA

Wildlife expert Chris Packham secretly slipped the song titles of 22 Madness hits into BBC2's Winterwatch.

Packham, 51, gave a hint of what was to come when he told viewers he was wearing "Baggy Trousers".

Later in the week, while discussing the best places to spot rare breeds of bird, he said: "My Uncle Sam, he lives in NW5," name-checking two lesser-known singles - Uncle Sam and NW5 - in one sentence.

And in the same episode, he managed to mention "Tarzan's Nuts", the band's most obscure number, which was released only in the Netherlands, by saying: "These squirrels out there swinging in the trees like little Tarzans. Nuts is what they're after."

But somehow he failed to fit in Madness's only UK number one, House Of Fun.

The TV host confirmed his game by tweeting: "Madness. The singles only. Ten so far."

On last year's Autumnwatch, Packham seamlessly weaved the Best Picture winners at the Oscars into his improvised script.

And in previous years, he secretly dropped songs by The Smiths, The Cure, Manic Street Preachers, and David Bowie live on air.

You were informed about something you would otherwise not have known. Therefore.... I think it's cool. Didn't captain slow do something like that inane article whilst he was working for a car magazine thing.

Ages ago when I had a summer job as a secretary I was egged on to do a letter to a client and put in as many Elvis song titles that I could. I did and I got away with it. Can't remember what I wrote though.
