Slumdog Millionaire tops box office

Slumdog Millionaire

Danny Boyle's award-winning Slumdog Millionaire has leapt to the top of the UK box office.

The drama, which was named Best Picture at the Golden Globes, received a record-breaking 47% boost in takings in its second week to move up from second place in the chart.

Gory slasher remake My Bloody Valentine 3D entered the box office chart at number four, the best ever opening for a 3D film in the UK.

Nielsen EDI, the industry body that monitors box office, confirmed Slumdog Millionaire enjoyed the most successful second weekend ever recorded for a film that has not substantially increased its print number.

The film's total UK box office takings after 11 days now totals £6,162, 445.
In addition to winning four Golden Globe awards, Slumdog Millionaire has also received 11 BAFTA nominations.

Critically acclaimed drama The Wrestler, which features an Oscar-tipped comeback performance from Mickey Rourke, entered the box office chart at a disappointing number eight, outdone by the talking dog comedy Beverly Hills Chihuahua, in at six.
