Ameobi open to Newcastle stay

Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi has admitted he would be open to staying with the club, if a new deal is available.

The long-serving hitman is out of contract in the summer, and has been linked with a move elsewhere as the Magpies look to rebuild after a disappointing end to the current Premier League season.

But Ameobi, who has spent his entire career in the north east, hinted it would be difficult to leave St James' Park, and would welcome a new deal.

"I never say never in this game because I don't know what is going to happen next season, but it has been a fantastic 14 years for me here and I've loved every minute," Ameobi told The Chronicle.

"Yes, we've had our fair share of ups and downs over the years but on the main I've been overwhelmed by the support and everything that has come with playing for Newcastle United."

His manager Alan Pardew, who is under severe pressure to make improvements to the team, also revealed he is planning to make an offer.

"That's something me and Shola and the Board will look at," Pardew added.

"He's been an absolutely magnificent servant for this football club."

The beleaguered boss also admitted it will be a big summer for him and the club, and replacing Yohan Cabaye, who left for French champions Paris Saint-Germain in January, is on the agenda.

"It is difficult. But we hope to recruit well," Pardew added.

"We have done that since I have been here really.

"We lost a good player in the last window. We need to replace him for sure, maybe bring in three or four and move a couple of positions as well."
