Anichebe receives boss backing
Victor Anichebe netted a vital goal for West Bromwich Albion in midweek and is now being backed to lead their survival bid.
The Nigeria international stepped off the bench on Tuesday to grab a late leveller in a 1-1 draw with title-chasing Chelsea.
That result was enough to lift the Baggies out of the drop zone, but only goal difference is keeping their head above water.
Replicating the kind of dogged determination they displayed against Chelsea will be crucial in the final 12 games of their campaign, and boss Pepe Mel believes Anichebe is the man to provide the inspiration.
He said: "Victor is going to be so important to our survival hopes.
"I've been impressed by him. But I was proud of all my players against Chelsea. Now they have to show me we have the right mentality to win."
Anichebe is ready to shoulder the responsibility of firing West Brom to Premier League safety, and believes a stalemate with Chelsea provides the perfect platform on which to build.
He said: "I think we'll take a lot from that and take it into our next game. It is a big moment in the season.
"Having said that, every game is a big one when you're in the position we are in.
"A point against a team who are going for the Premier League and the Champions League is a valuable one.
"I was happy to get the goal but that doesn't really matter - it was just important we got a result.
"Everyone dug in and we showed what a good team we are. We took the game to them and could even have nicked it as well."
